Positive Playstation 3 Talk and Q/A

How we justify all that high-dollar hardware.

Very likely.

I asked the CS Rep when paying for the repair if there was an option to only repair and get my exact serial number back. He said I could request that on the included work order sheet in the coffin (I also have to detail that I need to yank a stuck disc out of it), but made clear - repeatedly and often - that odds were against that.

I did get to request what kind of model I will get back as a replacement. I should get another CECHAXX back. He did try and sell me on an "upgrade" to a slim 120GB.

OK now that everything is mostly fixed, we can all go back to playing games. Games like inFamous 2. Eurogamer's review is particularly glowing (and they're notoriously tough to please), which just makes me totally excited for this game. I've been replaying the original, trying to get the last two trophies to unlock the platinum (beat it on Hard and do all the stunts; I've found everything else already in a previous playthrough, thanks to a map) which if I'm successful will be my first ever.

I might pick up the first one as a freebie and give it another go. I really enjoyed the demo of the first, but I just didn't get into the game when I bought it.

Ended up canceling the repair. Decided to fix it myself. Toolkit and heatgun for solder reflow from ifixit and refurb power supply as well. I had debated only leveraging the new power supply if needed, but research implies that the shipping PS3 PSU is not an efficient AC to DC unit and the system pays for it with the resulting excess heat.

So you mean the new power supply is more efficient than the older ones? What I mean is, I had assumed (mistakenly, apparently) that they'd want the efficiency to be as high as possible in order to prevent that sort of thing, but they apparently cut corners.

Yes, in a strange twist the original super expensive PS3 units sourced less efficient PSU models. I assume that choice saved them money. As the PS3 got cheaper they started sourcing more efficient supplies, which I presume cost more.

Fixed.

It wasn't the power supply. Despite the fact my PS3 is a 2006 run; I already had the APS-226 PSU (second model PSU Sony employed). So the PSU I purchased is now a spare.

The problem was the solder and the heat gun was able to successfully reflow it. Little surprised that the system had heated enough to cause this issue. Despite the age and use, my periodic cleanings with compressed air had kept the system clean. I didn't find the unit clogged, soiled, or even deeply coated with silt. What had worn out was the cheap zinc oxide thermal paste. The classic white goop thermal paste had fully dried out. I replaced it with some IC diamond thermal paste. I am a little concerned I might not have done the best application job, but eh.

Tear down and reassembly was not as terrible an affair as I feared. The YLOD kit from iFixit helped make the job considerably easier.

One thing I'm assured of is that any of you with a PS3 that's using this zinc oxide, it is going to dry out long term the same as mine. Perhaps your ambient environment will better manage the situation, but the occasional talk you see on the Incredible Edible Internet about pre-emptively replacing the thermal compound is probably a wise choice.

That's a good warning. Mine is a December 2007 manufacture date, got it in March of 08. I wonder if it's coming due to do that stuff, which I'm sure would be fine since it's out of warranty anyway.

The PS4 is set to launch in 2012 according to Digitimes. Looks like Nintendo has got Sony worried. I bet the design engineers at Microsoft's Xbox division are having discussions right now about the Xbox 720 :P

I'll believe it when I see it. I think the PS3 and 360 have at least two more solid years in them. If it does come, I hope Sony learned its lessons with the marketing of the PS3, and I hope they make it more developer friendly. I don't much care about backwards compatibility.

Late 2012 in Japan, 2013 in the US at the earliest, IMO. You'll see a PS3 price drop at some point before the Wii U launches. Nothing to be scared of from Nintendo.

Well, crap. My 20gb got the red flashing light of death. Disassembly and thermal paste didn't help. Guess I'm headed to Target to buy a Slim tomorrow. Dammit.

Sony's repair service costs less than $100 for your out-of-warranty PlayStation 3.

Was your HDD data preserved? I've a crapload of saved games I'd like to keep, but it seems unlikely.

No, the HDD data were not preserved. When I upgraded the hard-drive in mine, I used the built-in backup utility with a 16 GB USB flash drive to keep about 14 GB worth of downloads and saved games. It didn't recognize my 120 GB USB hard-drive for some reason. :-?

And if it's dead, putting the HDD into a new system won't help, either. Looks like either way you're out your saves. :-/

Your videos are gone too. Videos are a one time download per machine key. Since it wasn't able to be deactivated before it died then the license just got irrevocably burned by the now dead PS3.

Customer service might can re-auth the videos, but it requires a cs manager to approve it. The CS rep I spoke to didn't seem too sure it would be approved.

The HDD is encrypted via the secret key of the PS3 so shifting it to a different machine results in a different key that is unable to decrypt and so the data on the HDD will be lost. Repairs will most likely be replacements. The quote I was offered to fix my 60GB was $125, IIRC.

The above is largely why I chose to fix it myself. A bit of Googling about the red light of death implies that hardware died: Dead fans, psus, and unfortunately even motherboards. Power supply and fan replacement is a pretty cheap shot in the dark if you want to try it.

I cracked it open.

Fans are working. Looked pretty clean in there. The thermal paste on the Cell and RSX was dried out. Reapplied some Arctic Silver. No dice.

Sony's retarded schemes won't see anything unless its formatted as FAT16. . . . you read that right . . . . .FAT16. Not FAT32 or any other kind of data setup. The drive must be formatted using FAT16, then the PS3 will see it, but don't be surprised if you have to go through folders in an odd way to find and copy your files. If they now see drives that were formatted using FAT32, I will be quite surprised and happy at the same time.

As much as I use my PS3, I hate the way the music software is setup - it actually puts songs in different locations if I copy a whole folder, and won't let me move the song back into the folder where it belongs, and a re-copy won't do anything. So annoying.

Bought a Slim. $269 out the door with some discounts. Kinda nice having wireless (I can get rid of the bridge I was using) and I won't miss the BC except for one old PS2 game that had Atari classics.
