Dead Space 2 gets free "DLC" thanks to EA's stupidity.

"DLC" ** was already included with the game, just not enabled, and EA claimed they were not going to give us any DLC. **How can content already included in the game be qualified as DLC?
Somebody mods a savegame to enable said DLC, and now we have an official patch that also enables the DLC. Win/Win for us, and EA once again loses face for being incompetent scam artists.

I hate DLC which is shipped with the game or was clearly intended to be core content from the beginning (ala Warden's Keep/Stone Prisoner in Dragon Age which was clearly intended to be part of the main game and pretty much directly advertises itself to you and begs you to buy it in-game).

Day one DLC is just a massive ripoff. If the content is there, and ready for release when it's shipped... it should be sold with the game. Not as a separate item.
DLC can be great, and can be vastly superior to waiting a long time for a big expansion. But ripping out pieces of the game just to nickel and dime your customers isn't endearing them to anyone. It comes across as more of a "we want as much of your money as we can, and the quality you get for your money is irrelevant" type move.

I'll happily buy DLC that's actually additional content, having to pay multiple times just to get the basic game doesn't impress me though.

I don't mind day-one DLC if it's free, like the DA:O content. It rewards people for buying the game new. Otherwise, I'm not a big DLC fan. I bought it for a few games - Beautiful Katamari for 360, DA:O for PC, and LC Stories for GTA4/PC. Otherwise I could leave it.

This. Horse armor sucks and I have no love for that, while Borderlands' DLC was a worthy purchase, and it was one of the very few instances where I have purchased DLC.

Actually, there were two level cap increases. One with the DLC, the other later that was for free.

That's the impression I got. They weren't going to offer us any DLC at all because we're dirty, dirty pirates and must be punished, but whoopsie! It was already included in the game, making it pretty obvious that the content was part of the game, and not some fantastic new stuff created after the game's release. I was reading the steam thread and it seemed that EA was shutting down servers hosting the savegame, but later changed their mind after the information had gone viral. People were then speculating that EA would force install a patch over steam to disable the content. Yeah, they eventually did the right thing with a strategic retreat, but that's only because it would have done a whole lot of damage otherwise. I just wish people would realize what DLC really is, besides a scam: It's a way to make you pay for content that was originally free via the modding community.
