I'm not sure I agree with this, the more money that has been invested into individual games the higher the risk of a loss that has lead to reduced variety and creativity for the sake of increased visual fidelity.Incorrect. I've already dealt with this: A platform accessible and preferred by a larger number of people yields greater potential reward for large monetary investments in gaming, encouraging more AAA titles
you may classify more first person shooters are "more AAA" titles but where did the flight sims go, the mech sims, the sci fi flight sims, the adventure games, where are the RTS's, if it wasn't for Blizzard RTS and 3rd person RPG's would be dead and Blizzard is an exception that took 12 years to make 2 games.... so instead of creativity and increased variety what's happened is all other genres have suffered horribly while the same rinse and repeat first person shooters have come out time and time again and if "this" first person shooter fails "well we must try a different story (not a different style of game) because first person is where the real money is".
I'm not against FPS's btw but it seems like studios in an effort to reduce risk can't bring themselves to do anything else at least not seriously.
p.s. I'd wager good money that consoles are destined to die insofar as they are destined to become pre-configured PC's with all of the associated versatility at which point the title of the thread will have to become "cheap PC's vs expensive PC's" which is sort of what it was all along in that the comparison has always been stupid with this thread being no exception.
