BF3 Newb; Lower Res or Lower Settings?

Postposted on Wed May 30, 2012 9:56 pm

I haven't been able to play games since I had a 4870 and a desktop. I just picked up a laptop with a 6850m/i5 combo and I'm running a Dell 23" @ 1080 off of it.

I cannot run BF3 at 1080 unless I have the settings in the lower range. Should I lower the resolution and play with better settings? Or keep it at 1080 and just lower the settings until it's playable?

From your experience what is the better game play alternative?

I have a similar problem with a laptop. I found decreasing the resolution and playing the game in a window to provide the best balance. I couldn't really get it playable at 1080 with lower settings, but you may have better luck than me with your card.

Higher res, lower settings. Need the extra pixel resolution to see far-off objects, especially when sniping.

^Agreed. Resolution above all else. The game still looks damn good on low across the board- but I'd bet you'll still be able to sneak in plenty of settings.

Good to know. Any tips on what settings are the biggest resource hogs? With medium settings @1080 FRAPs shows as low as 19FPS. I haven't done too much tweaking yet, just got the game a few hours ago from Amazon (on sale right now).

EDIT: When the NBA game is done I'll go back in and try all low settings and see how it looks.

AA and depth of field are big resource hogs.

You can turn down shadows and not notice much of a difference too.
