Left 4 Dead
Team Fortress 2
Portal

Those, I think, are available on Mac, so you may have/could have played them.

I also enjoyed Borderlands if you want class specialization and a leveling system. That one has been on Steam sale several times, though, so I would wait until you see it at $7.50.

I really enjoyed Crysis.

Also, it's a FPS/RPG hybrid, but Deus Ex: Human Revolution was great.

Borderlands is fun if you like that sort of thing. Of course the obvious BF3. Portal 2 is great if you played the first one.

If you like sniping, I was fairly impressed with the demo for Sniper Elite V2. It's got bullet drop, wind compensation, location damage, an emphasis on stealth, bullet time segments for good shots with a slightly haunting view of the enemy's innards being destroyed by your bullet... yeah. I'm not sure how the original was since I had never even heard of it, but this game definitely has promise IMO.

My first recommendation for shooters in the last half-decade would be STALKER: Call of Pripyat with this guy's overhaul mod collection. Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky are still quite enjoyable, too, also with Dolgov's mods.

Series Sam 3: BFE is a stupid, gratuitous, hilarious romp of a game. Metro 2033 is a good time. Dead Island's alright. Bioshock 1 & 2 are often like $5.

Oh man I don't know how I forgot STALKER.

SS is fun too, but co-op is so much better than single player, I don't think I could in good conscience recommend it for single player.

I just finished playing through Serious Sam 3 BFE. It's not the most nuanced or intricate gameplay and gets repetitive fast. Smarter 12-year olds would find the plot stupid and banal. But if you enjoy the old school Doom or Quake style balls-to-the-wall romp through hundreds of enemies and actually want to play a shooter that requires eye-hand coordination and isn't completely linear or scripted, then Sam 3 is hard to beat. Graphics are pretty nice too. Great game to play for a short while after a hard day at work to blow off some steam.

The first couple of level are kind of slow though.

(I have all the great pre-2007) shooters already.  Thanks for any suggestions you might have! I have a bias toward Single Player for sure. Thanks for your suggestions!

BF 3 would be technically speaking THE multiplayer fps at this time. Problem is EA keeps screwing it up and dividing the community. After so many expansion packs they intended to release i don't know if the multiplayer community will last till the end of the year.....

I'd also suggest Tribes Ascend, it's free2play but don't let that fool you....it looks amazing maxed out.

For single player, might wanna look into Bioshock series or Mass Effect. People seem to appreaciate those (i never tried them though).

Bioshock I and II are very good. Slightly different from your typical run and gun shooter (aka COD)
Crysis II is very good too. I like it a little better than Crysis I and Crysis Warhead, but I liked them ok too.
Call of Duty. I know there are COD haters out there, but for a single player FPS, COD:MW2 and COD:BO are a lot of fun.
Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are not really FPS, but are still excellent single player games.

I had a blast playing Hard Reset, and it's only $20. It's somewhat short, but I played through it about 4 times (steam says 23 hours). It is PC-only, I thought it looked great and runs very well.

Bulletstorm is fun, as is Hard Reset, and Serious Sam 3. Crysis/2 were both decent. Big shout for portal and portal 2 as well, if you fancy a puzzle-fps.

Borderlands is especially great if you play as a sniper. I crave Mordecai and the feel of Borderlands whenever I'm sniping in another game.

Also, play Bioshock 1&2. Immediately.

I'm going to have to give a dissenting option on Bioshock.

I liked it overall, but it gets repetitive pretty quickly. The story was quite interesting though, which is what keeps it in the good category for me. Never played the 2nd game.

I have not played the second game, either, but it was not developed by the same team as the first, which explains why I've heard so many people call it a blatant money grab.

As for Borderlands, good choice, but if you can wait, it's a complete steal at $7.50 for the GOTY edition (which runs for $30 normally). I've seen it at $7.50 at least three times, and I imagine they will throw some deal out there in the next few months since the sequel is on the way.

Bioshock 1>Bioshock 2. I'd rather replay Bioshock 1 twice than replay them both. It's not a bad game, it's just that Bioshock 1 is so much better.

Another vote of STALKER: Call of Pripyat from me. As it is it is great, but with some mods like atmosfear it becomes possibly my favourite single player FPS of all time. Infact, I like it so much that for the first time I have created my own mod for the(a) game.

I'll raise a dissenting voice against Borderlands. It never really clicked with me and I found it rather boring and repetitive. Just a bit too "console-y" really. However lots of other people do seem to like it and it's often so cheap in the sales that it's worth a shot i suppose.

Something no-one else has mentioned, I really enjoyed Battlefield Bad Company 2 single player. Generally seems much better regarded than the BF3 single-player component, and much cheaper if you're not really into the multiplayer game.

Just Cause 2 is also well worth a look if you haven't played it on Xbox already.

Another vote for Crysis 1!. Crysis Warhead is good if you want more of Crysis 1. You can safely pretend Crysis 2 doesn't exist. Battlefield 3 SP was very weak IMO, but some people rave about the MP. And it is verrry pretty. Deus Ex Human Revolution was pretty good IMO, but it's not your typical FPS. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a few years old by now, but it was a pretty good game IMO. Bioshock 1 and 2 are very solid choices, 1 > 2. Portal 1 & 2 are awesome.

Definitely the STALKER series w/the "complete" mods
Metro 2033
Crysis 2
And while technically not a FPS, I had a lot of fun with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Been playing the CS:GO beta lately and I rather like it. I suspect I'll be spending quite some time on CSS after the beta ends but before the game releases. On the other hand, I have serious doubts about dropping anymore money on all those BF3 expansions: there's simply way too damn many and I need to make a good assessment of how much content they offer before dropping in. (i.e. Decent amount of new weapons/vehicles on the new maps, instead of just the new maps.)

I wouldn't say it's consolized. I think maybe some people just use the word "consolized" to describe a game they don't particularly like. imo
It's a solid FPS would great graphics, good story, and lots of cool weapons including the nanosuit (which is awesome). Get the Maximum Edition. I only paid $20 for it at Amazon.

I've become pretty sick of the modern cookie cutter cod / bf mold, back to playing FEAR Combat regularly. Yes, the free edition of FEAR's multiplayer was released in 2006, making it older than you might have wanted, but I think it has the most unique gameplay and is by far my favourite FPS of all time. No consolitis here, as FEAR was made as a PC title first and ported to consoles a year later!

Preparing for a 4v4 CTF tournament, should be quite a good time!

Its a free game, and truly an incredible FPS with a great unarmed combat system, cool grenades, and perfect guns. Mastering the recoil of the G2A2 assault rifle is indeed an art.

Free installer for anyone interested in picking up the game:

http://fear-community.org/downloads/

Other than that, I've been spending a few hours a week on the CS:GO beta. Nbd.

Currently playing Metro 2033 and it's amazing. Stalker SoC and CoP are amazing with the Complete mods, though Clear Sky is meh. Crysis is meh, has some fun moments but I'd be surprised if you don't wind up asking yourself "that was it?"

Great thread. I liked the first and third Stalkers - couldn't get into the second one. Will replay them with complete mods. (Thanks all!)

Another vote for Borderlands. Crysis and Warhead - 2's OK but the short play, long video cut is disruptive.

Both Far Crys. I go back to the first one often for laughs - doing it with a pistol, etc. Great replay potential, in a very open world.
