Looking to buy my daughter a couple of games for Christmas. The vast majority of games are very boyish.
Any suggestions for games for a 7yr old girl with an Xbox 360 without Kinnect, and a Nintendo DSi XL.

Here are some good titles for the DS that are more or less gender-nuetral (I don't have a 360.) I highly recommend scribblenauts though. It grows with you.

http://www.gog.com has some kid-friendly old-school stuff too. King's Quest point and click and so on...as long as she doesn't care about graphics much these are very age-appropriate.

In my honest opinion the best games for her in her age would be some of these point & click Adventure games such as Syberia, Broken Sword and Secret Files series, they're some of the best adventure games ever made and they're suitable for all ages and mentalities in my opinion.

NONE of those games are appropriate for a 7 yr old. What were you thinking? Are you TRYING to be malicious?

As for appropriateness, it depends on the kid really. I was playing Robocop Vs. The Terminator on my Genesis at that age(It's mostly just pixelated blood in early levels, after a while all you fight is stuff from Skynet thus being a ton of robots that go explodey), and I'm female(not exactly the target audience for such a thing). My little sister at age 7? Noooooooooooo way did my parents let her near that stuff.

Anyway, the X360 has an extensive selection of demos you can try out. Also look at the Xbox Live Arcade service, there are a ton of kid friendly games there, plus various old Sega games like Sonic Adventure and stuff.

XBLA is actually a pretty decent source for retro games, surprisingly.

Animal Crossing (item collecting, decorating)
Harvest Moon (micromanagement, might get difficult later on)
Professor Layton (minigames, Puzzles, Brain teasers, reading)
New Super Mario Bros (Platformer )
Picross (puzzle + space relations skills)
Cooking Mama (minigames + learning how some foods are made)
Tetris Sequels / Clones (puzzle )
Zelda Spirit Tracks (adventuring, puzzles)

Keeping in mind I'm a 29yo man with no kids, a very skewed reference point.

Trolling is one thing. When you start to mess with kids, its another thing entirely.

Rethink your path in life friend.

On steam, try Faerie Solitaire, Zuma's Revenge, Bejeweled 3 and Puzzle Quest 1&2.

Bah, if you're going to Steam, try the entire Lego *insert License here* set, which is also on X360(And on DS in the form of entirely different games with the same name).

From what I have seen, most of the pink and sparkly games suck. I'll avoid a rant about brainwashing children. Many games aimed at kids have both a boy and a girl character.

I think that point & click adventure games were the best for me as a young gamer, though I also dabbled in strategy games and rpgs... basically whatever my dad & brother played. If you play games, I would let her watch and then help her play the same game.

Unfortunately, point and click adventures are pretty rare on console though there is a huge library of Nancy Drew games that are reasonably priced on steam. They are targeted at girls too, so that might be worth checking out.

^THIS has been our experience so far. Whether it's Barbie, Dora, or whatever, the girly games have been a huge disappointment. She's tried a few of her older brother's games like Kirby (offshoot of Mario) and had a lot of fun with that, and as I mentioned earlier, she like Plants vs Zombies some too.

I could buy a bunch of games and hope for the best, but when they're $15 to $30 each, I hate for it to be a waste.

Thanks for tips JAE and IST, but the only platform I have for her is Nintendo DSi XL and Xbox 360. Otherwise, those look like good options. Actually I have a Kindle Fire she can use too, but I don't think Steam will work on there, will it?

The Lego games I mentioned are on X360, and Xbox Live Arcade is something included with every X360. It's basically a download service for it intended for smaller games or retro ones.

Like I said, try her out on a whole bunch of demos for the X360, see what she likes, and surprise her with some. Also, don't be afraid to grab used games.

We have one XBLA disc that I picked up (used) last year from Gamestop. It has several fun games including pac man and Ms Pac Man. Good stuff there. I'll try that route again too. I had completely forgot about the free demos on the xbox360. I'll go back and search through them.

I know my kids enjoy these xbox games:

the Lego games (indian Jones, Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc..)
Minecraft (on the Xbox)
Civilization

I was wondering why I had to scroll all the way down here to get this response. It's popular with all ages, so you can join a nice server that is good for children. The adults like to help out as long as the children aren't obnoxious.

Its also great single player, AND as a teacher, I can recommend it for building math concepts and visuality.

I really must say, as a woman, I'm a little offended at the idea of games "for girls". (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻ I grew up playing Quake and Street Fighter, so why can't other girls? I remember latching onto Chun-Li as one of my only examples in media of a strong, independent Asian woman standing up and competing with a bunch of burly men on their own terms. I think that kind of positive experience, with a character that girls can relate to in a traditionally male-dominated medium, is important -- and a lot more positive than limiting girls to "girls' games", which reinforce negative stereotypes and (speaking as a gamer, not just a woman) are generally terrible games. (*￣m￣)

I really think the Dark Souls recommendation is right on the money. (●ゝω)ノヽ(∀＜●)

It's brutally challenging, so it might be a bit hard for a seven-year-old, but maybe in a year or two -- and it will really give her a different experience than almost any other game out there. You might sneer at the "inappropriateness" of it (a concept I discard altogether, as innocence is a nonsensical psychological construct), but you can be sure she'll never forget it.
