Re: Steam Sale - Christmas 2012

Has anyone else been disappointed by the Steam sale this time around? The prices are good, but nowhere near the old days, when it looked more like a going-out-of-business sale. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Steam no longer competes with the used market and consequently publishers don't feel much pressure on prices anymore.

I think it's more that it's hard to be impressed by Steam sales any more - we've gotten used to very low game sale prices.

It's a lot less exciting for me because a lot of the most heavily discounted games, I already have. Dishonored? Bought it at launch. Mass Effect Bundle? Bought those two years ago! Batman? Bought it during last year's sale. The prices are going to have to be just a little lower for the other titles for me to impulse buy - particularly the indie titles that look interesting but I'm not assured of their quality. Speaking of indie titles... anybody else notice that there seem like a lot more indie titles on this year's sale?

Anybody play Deadlight? I like the artistic style but the reviews don't appear to be too stellar.

2013 is going to be THE indie year, given all the Kickstarter projects that are due for release. I agree about the deals being "meh", too much of it is big name titles getting less-than-expected reductions. It doesn't really matter though, I've got a massive backlog to work through, as well as finally getting Borderlands 2 (though I was planning on waiting longer, my brother gifted me a copy).
I am jaded. I am cynical.

Half of the games I buy any more are 'indie' games - I use quotes because they aren't all typical of indie games which are typified by low graphics/sound production values but compelling enough gameplay and story to make it worthwhile. When a game is $2.50 or less, even if it's only a few hours of gameplay, if it's fun then it's worth it. That's worst case - ones that do provide long-term gameplay and replay value are exceptional values, and fun!

To clarify, I don't necessarily have anything against the concept of an 'indie' game. I just find their quality is variable enough that I can't make a snap decision on whether or not to buy one.

In the light of THQ's bankruptcy, I do recommend picking up Saints Row: The Third. It is a whole lot of fun.

Got it in the Humble Bundle. I was bored after a few hours. :/
That's surprising to me. Mission design was unique, the voice acting was better than most and the game was constantly reminding me how to have fun. And who doesn't love playing a Japanese game show with automatic weapons?

im planning to get the whole pack for thq i want darksiders basically but since they r going bankrupt i shall help in any way possible

Steam is currently running a deal on the new XCOM on their frontpage. They are charging $33.49.

Meanwhile GMG (I've used it before) is running a deal on XCOM where they're charging $24.99 and with coupon code GMG30-DPLIM-DN831 it is only $17.50. That's half of what it costs on Steam. The game even activates on Steam.

I really like Steam as a platform, but I seldom buy Steam-activatable games on Steam these days. The prices just aren't what they used to be.

It's been there ($7.50) multiple times since it was released. I grabbed it on the first sale they had on it just because it was 7.50.

I've managed to get through this sale so far with zero purchases. Might finally pull the trigger on Natural Selection 2 if it goes on sale again, but there's very little I'm interested in that I don't already have.

...and...you know, I still have other games to play and finish.

I think all I got so far was Giana Sisters for three other people.

Awright picked up Hero Academy and Dota 2 for me and my brother (who just got his Battleforge account hacked because he fell for a scam...sigh. I thought he was smarter than that, heh.)

I haven't been terribly impressed with the Steam sale this year. It was quite a let down and nowhere near the crazed hoohah from last year.

Picked up Ace of Spades near the end of the sale. Probably won't get to play it until tomorrow since I have to head to work, but feels good making it to the end of the sale before picking anything up.

So I picked up Sleeping Dogs this past weekend, my god why did I not get this any sooner? The voice acting is superb! And the music, WOW.
