Steam Summer Sale - 2013 Post-Mortem

Postposted on Mon Jul 22, 2013 2:23 pm

So, the 2013 Steam Summer Sale is over. What did you all pick up? Who overspent? Who stuck to a budget? Who actually spent *less* than they intended? Any games that didn't go on sale, or didn't get a deep enough discount for you? Oh and, when you think you'll actually get to all the games you bought?

I picked up:
-Left for Dead 2
-Just Cause 2
-Portal 2
-Mark of the Ninja
-Burnout Paradise and
-Bully Scholarship Edition

Total, that's about $32. Not bad for me, especially since this is my first Summer Sale and I've only been a true PC gamer since March.

Had to get L4D2 - best co-op out there IMO.

Tried Just Cause 2 for $3.74 and its okay, but not amazing. I was hoping it would be a 3rd person version of something like Far Cry 3, but it really doesn't measure up. The controls are wonky, the enemies are annoying rather than challenging, and destroying bases can be tedious since missing one stupid thing can lead to a lot of boring searching.

Portal 2 - Classic!

Mark of the Ninja - Amazing reviews and tons of recommendations. A must buy at $3.74.

Burnout Paradise – for me, the Burnout series has been the best racing franchise out there since Burnout Revenge came out. Tons of speed, nice looking cars, and amazing crashes. Was only sad that it never went out as a daily, flash or community sale. That said, $10 is not a bad price, even though I saw it was $5 at Gamestop (but that involved using Origin).

Bully Scholarship Edition – Solid reviews and a $3.74 price tag, why not?

Was disappointed that I didn't see a $15 price tag on Far Cry 3. That’s the only game I really wanted that I didn’t get. I’m sure it will hit sub $15 in a sale soon, if not then definitely by Black Friday.

I’ve been playing L4D2 all week, tried Just Cause 2 (meh) and will install Burnout tonight. Next in line from this list is probably Portal 2 once I finish Saint’s Row The Third (yay for Humble Bundle!). I’ll probably be through all these games by the end of September – yay for DoD furlough giving me more game time!

BTW, my steam name is Southrncomfortjm if anyone wants to play any of these games or Borderlands 2 coop with me.

Just Cause 2 is insanely fun. I don't think you've given it enough time. It has a grappling hook and infinite parachutes for crying out loud!

Personally i grabbed just two games. The Witcher 2 and Dishonored. All the other games available would have likely gone unplayed or I already have.

Kerbal Space Program for $10 and change. It's a good buy so far.

Organ Trail for $2 or whatever. Haven't played it yet.

System Shock 2 for $2.50. Played it a little; when I get bored with KSP I'll come back and get some of the mods so it won't look so old. I've heard the story and such is really good.

Surgeon Simulator 2013 for $2.something. Meh. At least I didn't waste much on it.
Think for yourself, schmuck!

Got fallout new Vegas for 2.50 and tomb raider for 13.... That's about it. Haven't played either much yet. I think I'm getting too old for gaming these days.

Didn't even spend 80 bucks in total. Now I just need to find time to play the damned things....first world problems? :P

I haven't given up on it yet. I'll give it a try again this weekend.

willanfel - Absolutely. There are few people who would think $5 was wasted on LFD2. Endless replayability in both coop and versus. Just an all around stellar game. Just wish Valve would produce games of that quality more often... what was the last full release we got from Valve? Portal 2?

I'd played plenty of LFD 1 and 2 on my Xbox, so I decided to get it on my PC too. Way better with all the mods. Its just a lot more entertaining to have Deadpool, Master Chief and Isaac from Deadspace running around killing zombies rather than the normal character models. I still need to try the mod that replaces all the normal zombies with the aliens from Starship Troopers.

Didn't really have a set budget, but I spent about $85 for:
Amnesia
Civ 5
CS:GO
Endless space
Evochron Mercenary
FTL
Mark of the Ninja
Max Payne 3
Osmos
Super Meat Boy
The Walking Dead
XCOM

The only one that wasn't 50%+ off was Evochron Mercenary for $17, but I was desperate for a space sim.

So far Mark of the Ninja is sort of the "sleeper hit" for me. I had never even heard of it before but it's one of the best stealth games I've ever played. The story in The Walking Dead was surprisingly good, even if it's not much of a "game". Endless Space is incredibly addictive (I spent 10 hours in 2 days playing a single game)

CS:GO is better than I expected too. The gun handling/physics feel much more similar to the original CS than to CS:Source (ie, burst firing matters more and spraying is less effective). I was instantly competitive even though I haven't really played CS in years.

The influx of new players to Natural Selection 2 and L4D2 has been nice as well, even if I don't necessarily want them on my team :P

I bought it for $50 back when it first came out and even at that price it's one of the best game purchases I ever made, so for $5 it's a truly amazing deal. It has twice as many campaigns as when I bought it, tons of mods, and even though it's easy to get into, I still feel like I'm improving after 1000 hours of playtime.

Dota 2 technically was released just 2 weeks ago, although millions of people have been playing it in "beta" form for 1 1/2 years. Either way that's still more recent than Portal 2. It's pretty much my least favorite type of game (both the gameplay and fantasy setting), but by all accounts it's a great game for those who enjoy that kind of game.

About 20 bucks on myself, very impressed that I didn't spend more.

Hitman Aboslution $6.24
Far Cry Blood Dragon $6.74 (MACH 4 STYLE, MOTHER%%%ERS!!!!)
McPixel $0.99
System Shock 2 $2.49
Sword of the Stars: The Pit $2.50
RAGE: Scorchers DLC $1.24
--------------------------------
$20.20

Also gifted Deus Ex: Human Revolution to a friend who had it on his wishlist because it was $2.99.

Would have picked up Far Cry 3 for under $10, sadly I don't feel UBI is deserving of 23.99 with their uplay crap and their previous awful treatment of PC gamers over the years.

Also, lol @ COD being $30 on a daily deal during the sale. What a joke.
