Metro without 2033?

Postposted on Sat Dec 07, 2013 1:43 am

I picked up Metro: Last Light on a steam sale, I've only played it for a little bit but I'm hooked. Since it seems to tie in to the original game I'm wondering if I should invest the time to play 2033 before I get too far in to it?

Anyone play both? Is it worth the $15 to get the original and play through it before I continue with Last Light? I don't have a lot of time to play games anymore, in fact this is the first time I've played anything since... I don't actually remember. Just curious what the gerbils thought.

I've seen 2033 drop under $4 USD on steam before... would be for the best to play it first, but Last Light is still an incredible game regardless.

Well great, looks like I need to spend ~12 hours on 2033 first! Apparently I'll have to cut out showering to fit it in to my schedule

Thanks for the offers, I wasn't expecting that at all. I fired up Origin just to see the going rate there and realized I already have it, must have picked it up in a humble bundle or something... Installing now!

Yes, it was in a humble bundle, and it is worth playing.

Shows how much I play. I keep buying all these games because they are a good deal and then they sit, I forget I even have them!

Kind of funny that the Origin install actually hands it off to Steam anyways. The good news is that it snowed pretty good here so I won't be going anywhere, looks like I have the day to play.

*edit* OK that is stupid, Origin downloads the whole game, says the steam installer needs take over, so steam installs it then it proceeds to download the game from the internet. Guess I should do some chores to appease the GF while I wait.

Glad to see you found a copy of 2033 buried deep in your digital library.

For those not fortunate to already have 2033, it's on sale for $7.49 on the Origin Action Games sale today (I would prefer to get it from a different source than Origin, but a deal is a deal).

Yeah, when using Origin for Steamworks games, just grab the key and put it in Steam and save yourself the extra step.

Impulse used to work that way too but now they just use a stub installer that helps you do that.

Yes, definitely play through it or you miss like half the story. The original was a great game in and of itself, it's definitely worth the couple of dollars you can get it for. I highly recommend both of those games.

I was able to finish 2033 last night, took about 7 hours to complete but I kind of ran through it, plus I should have probably turned up the difficulty. When I first started playing I had the impression I had to explore the entire metro map they had on the screen and was like "Oh great, now what did I get myself in to, I'll be done in about a year" so I rushed through everything.

Now on to Last Light. I think I'll take my time on this one and get the difficulty dialed in. I think I'll like the stealth more in this one too.

You might replay it at a bit slower pace - takes me about 40 hours to get through 2033 and following through everything. It's a great game with an awesome story.

If you played through it you probably have the gist, but it's a creep,y atmospheric game that does best if you take your time. You may want to play through it again and see if you missed anything. Except the ridiculous mutant green slime things near the end -- those were horrible, and you should go as fast through those as you possibly can!

40 HOURS?! Goodness I don't think I could invest that much time, just didn't seem like there was enough there but apparently I must have missed a whole swath of the game.

I'm really liking LL, it seems much more polished, there were quite a few things I didn't like about the first one. Absolutely love the stealth/knock out mechanics on this one though. I wish they would have made reloading saves quicker. I keep getting found out by guards so I have to rethink which ones to take out and spend time watching their paths only to have one of the guards react differently so I have to start all over again. Definitely taking my time on this one story wise as well.

Yeah, there are a lot of little details you miss if you run through it. Just take your time and interact with things that interest you. Most of the game has little flavor bits attached to it. The more time you spend, more enjoyable and drawn in you get. Don't forget to get your lapdance too! They spent a lot of time perfecting those highly tessellated mammories.

Heh, since my last post I've put about 40 hours into FTL. I could have played Metro 2033 and the sequel in that time and still had time to play some more FTL :P

I need to start playing games on "stupid easy" settings to blast through the back-catalogue of games I keep buying on Steam. Impossible/Hardcore/Brutal difficulties are satisfying to beat, but I sure am wasting a lot of time....

All I know is when I first played 2033 I got to an area I couldn't get past and gave up on it. We'll see if that happens again...didn't have my saves from before.

Kept dying or didn't know where to go? I could see where there would be a few spots that would be tough without enough ammo. With Last Light you can pretty much just sneak through everything. I've only fired my pistol to take out lights so when it comes to killing monsters I have a lot of ammo to spare.

I've just started chapter 12, so it looks like I'm not even halfway through and I have about 5 hours into it. I've replayed levels soooo many times because I've alerted the guards  It's like playing an old-school 2d platform jumping game all over again, progress is just iteration but you get to start all over again after each failure. Not having a user initiated save system really peeved me at first, especially because I have normal life stuff come up right in the middle of playing that I have to take care of. I'm kind of liking it though, I like playing without that extra safety net.

Once you beat the game are you allowed to go back and play any level you want? I've missed some notes so I wasn't sure if I have to play the game all over again.

IIRC it was that spot where the bandits take Bourbon to their leader or sommat and I couldn't find a way around em and died when I tried to get rid of em.
