Need Win 7 Driver for Old PC Gameport Device Plugged via USB

Postposted on Tue Jan 28, 2014 5:32 pm

I've just gotten a PC Raider joystick (this) from Amazon. It's has a 15-pin male plug, so I also got a USB adaptor for it too.

When I plug it into my Win 7 Pro 64-bit system via USB, it reads as an "unknown device" and doesn't seem to install any driver software and so the joystick does not yet work.

Please help! Gotta use joystick! Help!

Thanks in advance!

My guess is that you won't find a driver, especially for 64-bit Win 7.

Your best bet is probably to use XP Mode (if you have Win 7 Pro, or another VM if you don't) and play your games inside that (assuming the VM doesn't slow things down too much).

Otherwise, unless there's some community driver development out there, you're going to have to find a joystick with win7x64 drivers.

Or find an old WinXP computer with acceptable specs and use that for this purpose.

Buy a Rockfire Gameport to USB converter, model RM-203U. I run my old Suncom F-15 Eagle HOTAS with it.

Ugh. The sight of that old Gameport connector makes me both nostalgic and cringe at the same time. They just NEVER seemed to work quite right; at least not without alot of effort.

Anyhow, Windows 7 shouldn't have any trouble working with a basic 2-axis 2-button joystick. The problem is almost certainly your Gameport-to-USB adapter. You might try the suggestion Wingless gave (it's the top result on Amazon).

I keep finding lots of instances of a model RM-203. Will that do as well as a model RM-203U?

Just out of curiosity, why are you wanting this particular joystick so badly and not a modern one that's natively USB?

What, you mean like a thumb-stick or something? Nah.

I read that page that was linked to above.

So will a Rockfire Gameport to USB converter, model RM-203 suffice for lack of a model RM-203U?

I found a bunch of units when searching for "flight stick USB".

Heh, what?

I suppose I'm the jerk when I give this little putz his snarkiness right back in his face in multiplicity...? You people should already know how easily I can do it better than the bthylafh-kind.

Why don't you moderate someone other than me for a change before I embarrass yet another jackass, for the umpteenth time, eh?

Meanwhile, get your goony ass onto my Ignore List, bthylafh--you only wish you could be so elaborate!

Wow, is that what you people tell him to do here!? Put a muzzle on him--I don't have to take that crap reasonless, get it yet?

I got all the info I needed, no thanks to bthylafh, buncha random nonsensical jumble of letters so unintelligible! And no, it's not the flight-stick, no. I didn't need someone else's help just to find that! Hmmkay, thanks!

Nominated for "most bizarre meltdown this month". :o Take your meds.

Look. Unless there's something really special about this old gameport joystick of yours (like nostalgia, because you had this model as a kid), what's the point of fussing with it instead of buying a modern joystick?

My confusion about whether you're trolling is because you'd have to be kind of thick to think I was referring to buying a console-style controller instead of a modern USB equivalent to what you've got. So which is it?

Why do I get an e-mail notification when a user on my Ignore List makes a post?

Anyway, I got all the info I think I need. Kthx! If I have any other questions about this, I'll ask! Later!

Seriously The Lord of the Flies.....what a rant. I was just think the exact same thing as bthylafh. And you still have said what so special about this particular joystick that a newer one would be an acceptable replacement.

Have to agree. That escalated strangely. Do you two have a history in some other thread?

Not that I can remember, but I have a vague memory of having killfiled him before, or of wanting to. Maybe when I was still in the R&P forum? It's been since early '09 that I quit, though.

edit: hmm. I searched through his posts and the last interaction I had with him seems to have been positive - he posted a question about an old game he'd found on eBay and what was needed to get it running. This was in 2010 sometime. It's a mystery. :-?
