How we justify all that high-dollar hardware.

21:9 monitor for gaming?

Postposted on Wed May 14, 2014 1:44 pm

All,
I currently have a dell 2408 wfp 24" monitor on my desktop.

I realized a while back that my desktop's new primary function will be gaming/media, now that i'm out of college.

I've thought about a new monitor for a while, debating between a new 27" 1440p or a 21:9 1080p monitor. The 1440p is a definite upgrade, where the 21:9 is really a side-grade.

Does anyone game on a 21:9 monitor and have any pros and cons for me?

Non-standard resolution and enough extra pixels to need a GTX 780 to push a game smoothly - I wouldn't. I feel 1440/1600p is more than enough for games at the moment - I'm sure someone else might chime in with a 4K comment too. Well, 4K it is out there but has a lot of issues with scalability, refresh rates and Nvidia/AMD's GPU's not (currently) having enough power to really pull it off convincingly. I'm getting that in first.

I'm also looking to move up from my 1200p Samsung screen, but can't budget for it currently, as my entire system would need upgrading to game at a better resolution. 1440p to 1600p is where I would be going...

you would definitely run into some issues with games that never considered any other aspect ratios than 16:9, kind of like when 4:3 was the standard and 16:9 was just emerging

I personally have negligible experience with out-of-spec aspect ratios, which pretty much starts and ends with running Unreal Tournament on a modern screen.

I'm guessing you'll find more information, and quicker, at a dedicated site, such as Widescreen Gaming Forum :

This is the only one I remember, though has seemed rather useful the few times I've looked through it.

Most modern games pull their resolution options from the OS- support isn't really an issue. Eyefinity and SurroundView users would run into the same issues.

As for the performance issue, just keep in mind that monitors last. You'll upgrade the rest at some point, and until then, you can turn down settings to keep stuff playable.

If you are primarily a multiplayer FPS player, I'd recommend a 120 or 144 hz 1440p 16:9 monitor instead of a 60hz 21:9.

Maximum fluidity is priceless.

Thanks all for the recommendation. I think i'll go hunting for a 1440p monitor. I agree with the "monitors will last over multiple upgrade cycles", so if i find a sweet deal on one of them korean-ips thingys i'll go for it.

Hell, i'm off to Korea soon for work anyways, maybe i'll just buy one there :P
