I'm looking to buy a laptop from $600-$1000 for college and think I've decided on a Pentium Centrino-Mobile processor on account of it's lower power consumption, resulting in 2 to 3 times longer batter life.

Can somebody link me to a benchmark of the mobile processors compared to the standard P4 ones... cuz i understand the mobile processors are much more effieicnet and have a higher IPC (instructions per clock).

Last I read was that a P4M 2.4 got trounced by a Pentium M 1.6

Any current comparisons of the Pentium M (up to 1.8 GHz) to the 2.4-2.8 GHz standard p4 laptop CPU's?

Still, the Mobile Pentium 4's performance lead in the notebook space may be short-lived. Intel is supposed to roll out a new "Dothan" Pentium M core later this year that will reportedly be built using 0.09-micron process technology, have higher clock speeds, and feature a massive 2MB L2 cache. As always, there's something better just over the horizon.

i have a pentium m 1.5 ghz with a radeon 9600 pro video card and it runs everything i have thrown at it with no problems at all . with the pentium 4 you might get a bit better benchmark scores but i think you would be hard pressed to tell the difference in speed if you just sat down at each and used them and the pentium m has way better battery life . my laptop will go right at 4.5 hours on a charge . i cant speak from personal experience but i think the best your going to do with a pentium 4 is 2.5 to 3 hours .

For your price range you'd really be hard pressed to find a decent new laptop. I'd seriously consider looking at used stuff, and probably with a PIII-M rather than a P-M processor, depending on what sort of laptop you're looking for.

The pentium-M is a great proc, but the only real problem will be even finding one that will fit your budget. You would be better off getting a p4 as the price will be much more reasonable.
