Good, small, Digital camera?

Mon Mar 29, 2004 8:48 pm

I'm heading to Europe this summer and thought I might pick up a small digital camera, that produces nice images and is easy to use. I have an Olympus D-510 (2.1megapixel, 3x optical zoom) right now.....but the thing is a beast compared to the one I saw HowardDrake with when he was here.......

Recomendations? I can read reviews at Newegg....but I value your opinions so much more.... :D heh.
Probably PUI. Definitely an كافر

HP makes some not too bad ones... Too bad they eat batteries like a bitch.

Some of the smallest around at the moment:

Pentax Optio S4i - 4MP - TINY! (my choice)
Sony xxxT1 (think that's the one, has the whole lens assembly inside the camera) - 5MP
Canon IXUS 400 (has different model names around the world) - 4MP
Casio xx (can't remember the model no.)

will post some links later on, but for now, see

and most importantly (my favourite for DC reviews)

I had almost the exact same question earlier, I ended up getting the Canon S410 for my sister. Another thing you should know about the manfacturers' warranties is that you automatically void them if you take the camera out of the country in which it was bought. So make sure and buy some kind of extended warranty that will cover that.

Suppose I'll bump this topic instead of starting a new one, as I need something similar:
- small and pocketable. (no larger than my iRiver iHP-120, preferably smaller)
- cheap - no more than $200, but the lower the better.
- decent quality - somewhere between 1-3mpix?
- doesn't require me to buy batteries for it. (I assume that means li-ion)
- doesn't look stupid. (like those ones with the lens on the corner of the camera sticking out...)
roughly in that order of importance.
Looking around at the sites mentioned above, I've taken a liking to the Canon SD110. Unfortunately, that's over $200, and it seems to be over 80000Ft or ~$400 around here new, and I can't seem to find any used. **** europe.

Can anyone recommend some other options to look at? I'm intending to put it on my christmas wishlist and then buy it myself if no one else does, so I'd like to keep the price down, as I don't want to (can't) spend too much, and I'm assuming neither do the ones buying presents.

If you want a cheap but small camera, your best bet would be something from Canon's Ixus line. They're not quite as easy to use as a Sony but the build quality is pretty good and the battery life isn't bad.
