Laptop Warranty Extension?

Sat Oct 09, 2004 6:07 pm

I currently only have one year Platinum Support for my laptop from Hypersonic-PC.com. Should I extend it to three years?

I have done some laptop troubleshooting, but only becouse I had to. I would say get it. Trying to troubleshoot a laptop without spare parts would be impossible.

Here's my dilemma which is similar?
Do I get the Best Buy service plan for 3 years at $249 on a $1100 laptop?

I heard Best Buys warranty sucks, if you can get a manufacturer warranty you're better off.

I was displeased with my Best Buy warranty. Of course htis was on a DVD player and not a notebook.

After a year of faithful service, my dvd player broke. So I take it down to BB and ask for warranty service. A week later I get a call, "Your DVD player is being replaced, please come to the store for replacement."

I come down and choose a DVD player of equal value of the one I bought, about $200. I asked for my papers to be changed for the new DVD player model, and am promptly notified that my warranty is no longer valid, because they had to replace my original player. Not happy. Then they had the nuts to ask me if I wanted to purchase another warranty for my replacement. Not Happy.

At least I got a replacement, but I would have reconsidered purchasing the warranty had I known that.

Depends on many things:

Cost of the warrantly
Reliabitlity history of the company
Terms and condition of the warrantly (what they'll fix and what they won't)
Is it mostly going to see desktop use and barely be moved from place to place or will it see major use wherever you go, lots of transport and tossing around?
Do you usually pristine care of your equipment or are you pretty rough with it.

hate to say it, but thats your own fault.

Next time actually read your warranty before you pay for it. It states pertty clearly on the back that the warranty is not transferable, and in the event the product is replaced the term of the warranty will end.
So how fast is your car, anyway?

Oh, about 1200mhz.

Remember the trouble emkubed had with one of his friends and a certain Dell warranty...as mentioned above...make damn sure you read all the fine print...3 times before you purchase...that said..and extended warranty on a lappie is a good idea providing it is a reputable company providing the warranty...Best Buy doesnt fall into this one at all

The one time I had to use a Best Buy warranty, I had no problem. I took a TDk burner in, they swapped it, said since I still had some warranty left, I could either leave it at that or I could pay the difference between the old one and a new one and get the full three years.

Most of the time, you only need the warranty when you don't have one...

I'm going to extend the one-year warranty on my HP laptop right before the year runs out. I"ll be getting it from HP instead of Staples, where I got it. I don't know how their plans work, but buying the warranty extension from HP was cheaper.
