NEED HELP DECIDING BETWEEN THESE 2....

Thu Dec 09, 2004 9:43 am

Mobile http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=314542&pfp=BROWSE

Non-Mobile http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=314532&pfp=hpf1

They are both the same price, but I know that cooling is tricky with my 3ghz in my desktop, so I dont even want to think about it in a laptop. I would like longer battery life- but 1.7ghz with the mobile? Sounds a bit slow... What would you all recommend?
3.0ghz P4 HT Northwood @ 800mhz FSB
1 GB Dual Channel Ultra Low Latency @ 400mhz
128mb 9800SE 256bit ATI
20GB Western Digital 7200RPM
80GB Maxtor 5600RPM

I had an idea of getting the faster one, then underclocking it, then when I would be plugged in i could unleash it at 3ghz. But somthing I dont get is the 2mb cache on the mobile centrino. what would that do?

I'd go with the centrino personally

BTW, notice the P4 has a radeon 9000 video card, and the centrino has Intel Extreme...if you're going to be gaming at all, get the p4 8)

Could you back that up a bit as to why?

The 9000 is a better card. I have one in my lappie, and it works real nice.

I already had an idea about that, but this computer wont be used for gaming all that much. So I guess I need efficient battery li-- and I just answered my question... thank you!

It's not a 1.7 P4....it's a PM...think more like 1.7Ghz A64 as far as performance

Yeah, when comparing a Pentium-M to a P-4 you have to mentally add about a GHz to the P-M: they do a lot with each cycle.

i ended up getting a 1.6GHZ pentium M w/centrino tech Its pretty fast but im curiouse as why they put a 2 meg cahce on it. Also the fans on this thing rarely spin, and it doesnt feel warm where the processor fan blows out all the hot air. How hot do these things usually run?

More performance, Pentium M's don't have the insane memory bandwidth like A64's and P4's do, so the cache helps out a bit

And they had room for the extra cache in the Dothans because they were fab'd at 90nm (vs Banias at 130nm). The typical power for the 725 is 21W when running at 1600Mhz @1.34V; max power is 28.8W. When SpeedStep'd down to 600Mhz it's 7.5-8W @ 0.988V (low-power mode). How hot that actually works out to is largely dependent on the design of the laptop. If you run something CPU intensive I'm sure you can get the fan to spin up and pump out some hot air. But generally the Pentium Ms run much cooler than any of their competition (and certainly cooler than P4-Ms).

Yeah, I would have linked your post but I had CNN open right in front of me.

Personally anything that keeps down population growth is a good thing. And I don't think too many college students are interested in being fertile at that stage of their lives anyway...
