Dell or Gateway?

Mon Mar 28, 2005 11:28 pm

I have to get a laptop, probably going to do some light gaming.

I'm leaning towards getting a Dell 600m vs a Gateway 4540gz. I had questions about the Gateway though. Specs list the gateway with a Intel Extreme Graphics 3D with 32MB. Is this the same as Intel extreme graphics 2 and how bad does it suck? The dell has a moble Radion 9000 card but the screen is 14.1" The gateway has a 15" screen. Prices are about the same. Do you think its worth putting up with the smaller screen for the better graphics card?

Thanks

I wouldn't recommend Intel graphics for Microsoft Word, much less gaming. The only thing extreme about their crud is just how badly it sucks. I've had computers in which the graphics actually slowed the entire machine down because it was so friggin slow rendering the desktop.
A most unfortunate, Freudian, double entendre is that hotel named "Budget Inn."

Thanks for the input. Just ordered the Dell w/ Radeon moble 9000/64Mb. Was more expensive but I figured that was something I couldn't upgrade. Still wondering if Intel Extreme Graphics 3D is Intel extreme graphics 2. Most laptops I looked at had internal grapics.

Wow, it took a lot of ear-grabbing and arm-twisting for you to make your decision.

Any Intel Extreme Graphics = internal graphics = teh SUCK
the 2 is a marginal improvement, but u're far better off with the Radeon. Don't even CARE what the rest of the specs are, that is the single most important difference.

I woulda gotten an Acer Ferrari or something tho :p

Well the compaq was in the store and I could use the computer for work now, waiting for it puts me in a little bind. It also looks a little sexier than the dell. Ultimately though I don't think I was ever in danger of buying it. Actually with no sales tax/shipping, the dell was cheaper at less than $1200.

Couldn't afford a high end Acer.
