Cell phones used in 24

Wed Apr 06, 2005 8:27 am

If you are watching the current season of 24, I am sure you can see a lot of cell phones being used (and advertised?). I kind of like the ones used by Jack Bauer and Habib Marwan. During the last few episodes that terrorist's phone just kept ringing (I am pretty sure he had like 3 extra battery in his pocket :)).

Can anyone recognize those models? Being a Nokia fan I was thinking those are similar to the 7270, but I think they are something else.

I do find them a bit more palatable. :)

And that's because I don't have a phone with a sexy form factor yet so I am looking. :-?

And it seems the entire CTU has switched from Dell to HP.

And some of the crazier fans of that show actually dial the numbers that were mentioned in the show too.

Wow Flying Fox, you're really keen on picking up these adverts. I did notice the HP's though, maybe not a switch. I just started this 4th season so can't say much.

I didn't see the cell phones but I don't really think its advertising. If you have to guess or squint to see the phones I don't their intention is selling them. I did notice in one of the episodes that there was a attachment sticking out of the bottom, but I'm just guessing that this was a microphone or something for the camera.

Those aren't called in-show product placement for nothing. :)

It's more like an extension to sponsorship. Instead of just mention "this show is brought to you by <company>", they actually put products in there. AFAIK Ford actually admited to do that in the show. I'm sure Dell and HP were doing the same thing too. This season not a whole lot happened in their server rooms so we didn't get to see much yet, but last season they were all Dells.

Being a tech guy you really can't help but noticing these things, and now with actual product being used in shows they have become gadgets that we can use too. I like the red/black look and the big LED on Marwan's phone. I was hoping it's the 7270 but I am sure Nokia was not a sponsor of the show.

I don't know about 24, but Ford did that for Alias... I think it was season 2 or 3, where in every car chase seen, there was a 5-10 second close up of the rear corner of the car which showed the Ford logo and the car model... and if I recall correctly one episode was shown commercial-free, but it was 40 minutes of car chases...

It wasn't too bad, but it did become a little obvious....

No one knows? Does this mean I really have to record an episode and do the zooming in myself? 8)

It's the Sanyo VM4500 (SCP-5500)

It was one of the first cell phones with a built-in camcorder.

Here's a link: http://www.mobiledia.com/phones/sanyo/scp-5500.html

Yeah, I think I have seen that Sanyo in the show.

But the one the terrorist leader was some sort of red-black clamshell, not sure about that one though. Jack also used a black phone before too?

the idea of any cameraphone being used in a government building is laughable...it would never happen.

Speaking of more product placement, last week's episode saw an Alienware notebook used to configure the custom chip to control the nuclear warhead. :)
