What did Dell put on this HD?

Wed May 18, 2005 10:42 am

Ran Partion Magic on my dell 600m and I found that Dell had partitioned the drive into three. There's a small FAT drive at the beginning labled DELLUTILITIES. Next is the NTFS partion with the OS. And finally there's an unnammed 3 gig partion that's listed as a "cp/m, Concorrent DOS, CTOS" drive. I'm wondering what is in that partion. Anybody have any ideas?

I'm guessing it's a back up of XP or something. Can't really find info on it after after a few google searches. I'd like to know what it is before I delete it. 3.6 gigs is a lot.

Found it here. It's for Dell's PC restore.

This lil deal that dell and other oem's have with ms is getting a bit tiresome..they should just furnish a orginal xp cd with the computer..since you are indeed paying for it. You should have the option to use or download their utilities..not have it installed from the get go. But..i suspect that the price they pay for their bulk licenses is far far less than the customer would pay for one at some other vendor. Either that or sell the system sans OS and let you install your own.

I agree they should provide the OS media.

They have been doing the hidden partition thing for a long time.

A long time ago on some P2/400 Dells we had, the command line tool to start the restore from the hidden partition was "ZZTOP" my boss and I still refer to that (on non-dells without anything hidden) like: "I think we may need to ZZTOP this one!" LOL
