What is on your USB flash drive?

Tue Oct 18, 2005 12:02 pm

I finally got around to purchasing one of these things to put on my keychain so hawt women will like me. Think I am kidding? I even bought the sexiest one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820180731

Seriously though I am using it for legitimate reasons but .doc files don’t really take up 490 megs. After some searching around for usb apps and hanging out in TRIRC I now have portable firefox, stinger, spyware removal tools and common video card drivers on it but I am not satisfied!

What do you have in your usb tool box?

Drivers!!! Lots of 'em!!!
They were particularly helpful when I didn't have x64 compatible nForce 3 drivers and thus couldn't get online to download any...

On mine I currently have an Imperial arseload of pictures from my vacation, some WinXP PowerToy installation packages, dhmodtool 2.2, and some mp3s from U2: The Joshua Tree.

I don't ever keep anything on there long. I use my flash drive mostly as a sneakernet device.

Ultimate Doom! That combined with the Doomsday engine, makes for a great co-op game.

My Password Keyfile and my CV & covering letter just in case I get to an interview and they don't have my CV on hand I can whip the USB stick out and get it printed off. Who doesn't have USB port in their PC anyway?

lots of fonts....as a graphic designer it's a pain to travel from computer to computer and find you are missing fonts when you try to open a project.

BTW, wouldn't the HT203 with the faster speed and red colour be sexier? 8)

Here goes nothing... keep in mind, this isn't an accurate tree, it's all IIRC (I'm between UFD's right now - my current one is unusable, my new one, well, Welch hasn't shipped it yet, I don't think...)

Apps\
     Opera 8.50
     Notepad++ (text editor)
     PuTTY
     PSCP
     Spyware Cleanup\
          Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta
          AdAware
          Spybot S&D
          CWShredder
          HijackThis
Avast (I throw that in JUST in case there's no AV app, or it's Norton crapware)
Firefox (this'll get retired, with Opera 8.5 being free)
Thunderbird (this, OTOH, will NOT get retired)
COTC\
Documents for college - I've filled up a 256MB drive with just C++ crap in here
Excel\
     Documents for HS
Random Assorted Junk\
     Self-explanatory, isn't it?
Drivers\
     Duh!

That's a rough outline of what I do, sometimes I add stuff, though...

Any and all drives you want to list.

And yeah but I'm too sexy for the HT203. Actually I got the HT202 on sale, otherwise the HT203 would have been my choice.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed thus far, I have already transferred some of the programs you guys suggested/use (like avast, I completely forgot about that  ).

music. since my machine at work doesn't have a CD drive. Good for me that the rest of the office is completely clueless about computers except the IT guy - he pretty much leaves me alone.

Heh heh... I decided to go for the overkill solution, and stuck a spare 80GB hard drive in one of these. Filled it with MP3s, and took it to work.

As far as flash drives go... well, I currently have 4:

- First one is a small-ish one, a 64MB Kingston DataTraveler. It has a bootable DOS image on it, and assorted low-level tools. I use it for flashing BIOSes, running Memtest86+ on new mobos, running hard drive diagnostics, etc.

- Second one is a 512MB Crucial Gizmo that I use for carrying personal stuff around.

- Third one is a cheapo SimpleTech one I picked up at the TigerDirect Outlet... this one also has a bootable DOS image on it, plus various Etherboot binaries from ROM-O-Matic. Used for booting diskless Folding@home nodes that don't have built-in PXE netboot capability. (Modify the autoexec.bat file to run the appropriate Etherboot image, plug it into the mobo that needs booting, and power cycle the mobo.)

- Fourth one is a 1GB Memorex memory stick supplied to me by my employer. They have a "no company data may be stored on non-company-owned media" rule. So I use this one whenever I bring work home.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I use one (128MB) for backing up my papers, the other (256) for my photos. My external hard drive gets those plus music and other assorted stuff.

Don't have one. Don't really have a need for one here at college. *shrug*
