New Windows 7 laptop?

Postposted on Tue Nov 03, 2009 1:37 pm

I am in the market for a new laptop. Want something that is fast, thinking core i7, Windows 7, wireless n,cd/dvd rw,great graphics and sound, and lots of hd space. This will be replacing my desktop, which is very old. Going to be using this for internet,iTunes, digital photography, basically everything. I have about $1800 to spend right now. What should I take a look at?

So you don't want it to be portable at all? I would honestly suggest you purchase a desktop and then pick up one of the great ultra portables. But that's just my opinion.

unfortunately your feature list can't be found on portable laptops. you'll find them in 18+" desktop replacements though. those things are technically portable, but they are too big to be moved very often.

of course, it all depends on what you mean by great CPU and graphic card. you can laptops that will do everything you've listed, but those typically won't have much graphics power. they almost certainly won't have a core i7.

Why not get a 15" MacBook Pro!

Honestly, I say that in the least-fanboyish way. A mac will net you everything you specified, even W7 compatibility, but minus the Core i7. But, I'm sure having a laptop that's light, good looking, and Mac OS X capable pretty much evens that out.

Just a thought...

If you're serious about getting a Windows only machine, the alienware laptops look solid too:

Define portable.

That being said, the xps 16 is probably the closest in that catagory. One of the best lcd 1920x1080 rbg led, ati 4670, 500 gig hard drive.

I agree.
If you want all that, it would be better to build yourself a new awesome desktop for around 1200 or so. Then if you really need mobility you can grab a netbook or something. just MHO tho

Personally if I had $1800 to lay down on my computing setup... as of right now it would be a mATX based P55 system with a Core i5 and probably an HD5770 (though honestly a HD5870 is possible on your budget). Then I would fulfill the laptop aspect with a ultra portable. If you don't mind going larger (as in 14" and 4.8lbs, not massive ridiculous 16"+) and still want some gaming support for the road then Asus's UL80vt is probably the best option (auto overclocking Intel CULV processor, Nvidia graphics (with switchable Intel option for battery life), and a tested battery life of around 10 hours).

Acer has produced some good netbooks and now a few ultra portables... but they're one of the last companies I want to buy a $1,000+ computer from. They excel at the "this is really cheap" department, not the "Wow now this is a quality product" one.
