If it's something you're just going to plug into your TV, then leave it connected all the time. Nothing terribly awkward about it. If you're trying to dream up your ultimate mobile device, then sure, it doesn't make the cut. But it's easier than you make it out to be, unless you have a gazillion different places you want to plug in HDMI.
