Galaxy S4 FLAC Playback

Sun Oct 20, 2013 7:49 pm

After poking around for a while on HDtracks.com I decided to buy an album in 96kHz/24-bit FLAC format. It sounds most excellent on my PC but will not play on my Galaxy S4. I later found out that, while Android natively supports FLAC, apparently it only supports up to 48kHz/24-bit files. I've tried a handful of third-party media players with no luck. It's not a huge deal; I'm just curious to know if there's any way to play the original files without converting or downsampling them.

A paid app might allow for on-the-fly downsampling, but since i'm assuming the S4 doesn't have the proper codec, you might just have to downsample everything yourself.
I never understood using lossless files on phones anyway. They aren't good enough to tell the difference between mp3 320kbps and lossless (imo).

PowerAmp will do this for you. Probably only the paid version.

I've been using PowerAmp for so long, I've forgotten that it handles crazy stuff like 96kHz FLAC without me having to worry about whether the underlying platform natively supports it.

I just use ffmpeg (and sox) for everything.

The SGS4 can do USB audio out. Pretty nice when combined with an external DAC/AMP.

Awesome, I'll try out PowerAmp. And yeah, I'm not expecting much of a difference from high-quality MP3s with my stock earbuds and noisy traffic whizzing by constantly... but hey, why not? :P
Thanks for the help!
