2 Window XP PCs Networked

Wed Nov 26, 2003 9:31 pm

I have 2 PCs networked thru a Linksys EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch BEFSR41 with Comcast cable. Both PCs have thier own assigned IP address 192.168.1.100 and 101. Both operating with Windows XP, and a Realtek RTL8139 fast Ethernet NIC. Both PCs are on 24/7, but the .100 PC disconnects from the Internet, usually after it's been unused for awhile, while the .101 PC doesn't. Anyone have any ideas what it might be? I turned off all the Power Saving options in Windows.

.100 PC

.101 PC

Do you have another NIC to install and see if you get the same thing with?

What exactly do you mean by "disconnects"? What are the symptoms? Can the PCs still talk to each other (e.g. Windows folder shares) after the one PC "disconnects" from the Internet?

it could be the auto disconnect option. This could be the reason behind your problem.

You may want to check your system properties for your NIC and see if the checkbox for turn this device off to save power is checked.

Yep the Save Power option is off.. the other options in the Properties are the same..

what's the Auto Disconnect?

The 2 PCs aren't sharing anything. I don't have any workgroups.

When I say disconnects, the little LAN icon in the System Tray disappears and u can surf the internet.. she (my wife it's her PC) has to reboot, and then she's connected again. Sometimes it happens while shes surfing, and other times while she's on ICQ and surfing, or ICQ and Telnet.. or other times she goes to use her PC, and it will just be disconnected. Doesnt seem to happen always.. just like 1 time out of 3 or so.

Basically how it was set up was, I had my PC already, build her one.. bought the router, and connected hers and mine to the router.

Got a spare NIC you can try? Could be a flaky NIC...
