one way file transfers

I have several computers on a home network. A couple fo the boxes run win 98 se, some more run xp pro, one runs xp home and one of the servers runs redhat. These are all connected via either a wifi or a netgear 10/100 switch.

Now to the question. From one of the boxes, I can send or receive files to/from any other computer. From the other boxes, I can send and receive files to/from any other computer except the first one mentioned. I can see the box in network nrbhd, see the folders using in my computer, but not access the individual files.

The connection seems to me one way for some reason. The real crazy part is the folders on the problem box appear to be empty when viewed from another box, while they aren't in real life, empty.

I'm stumped on this one. Help......

It sounds like a permissions issue. Check to make sure your permissions are set correctly.
Resistance is futile.

The settings are dupicates of the other computers that can see each other,
workgroups and all. I'm not running a domain due to the mixed os's, but this shouldn't make a difference.

Thanks for your help.

Can you post a chart of the computers that can transfer files and which way they go so I can get a bit of a clearer picture?

network chart

box 1------------------------------[ ]
xp pro

box 2------------------------------[
xp pro netgear 10/100 ]
switch
box 3------------------------------[ ]
win98 se

box 4------------------------------[ ]
xp home
wifi

There are more computers on the net, but the condition is the same.

Box 1 can see and move files from any of the computers on the network to any of the other computers on the network. The rest of the boxes, 2-8, can see and move files from any computer to any any other computer on the network except box 1. The other computers, 2-8, can see folders, but not sub folders on box 1. Attempts to access to subfolders and individual files result in access denied errors with a comment about permissions.

I can give more details if necessary. Thanks for your help.

you have the guest account turned on box 1?
Your bargaining posture is highly dubious.

Make sure you set your filesystem permissions on each of those folders to the everyone group, full control. Also make sure you are allowing the permissions to propigate to the subfolders and files.

Fixed it. I unchecked the drive sharing box, Ok'ed my way out, went back and checked the sharing box and OK'ed, my way out again. This reset the permissions and fixed the problem.

Thanks for your help and suggestions...............
