Wireless Adapter, USB vs PCI

Postposted on Tue Jun 23, 2009 4:39 pm

I'm moving one of the pc's out of the room that has the router (Linksys WRT300N). So I have to change it to wireless. What would be a better way to connect it wirelessly to the network?

I'm considering this Linksys WMP600N
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833124342
versus this Linksys WUSB300N
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833124331

This pc is used for basic internet surfing, but casual online gaming could be in the near future.

What do you guys think?
Thanks

I'd probably take the PCI route myself. I'd be scared of breaking the USB version.

Yeah, that thing does stick out rather obnoxiously, doesn't it.

Well no, I guess not. That's a good point. It just seems that wireless can be so problematic. I assumed that staying within the same family brand would tend to make it less troublesome. Those Encore's certainly have much better prices. If I have problems and turn to Linksys tech support, they will probably blame the other brand as the issue. I could be wrong of course.

It's been recommended somewhat here.
I don't really stick to any particular brands.
I look for Tomato/DD-WRT support(routers), and price.
Checking reviews help to see if there's any issues.

That link is somewhat dated (over a year old), but still good information. Thanks.
The reviews at Newegg on the Encore card are all over the board. From great to miserable. Of course you see the same with the Linksys brand too. For only $25, I don't see how I could go wrong with the Encore brand. idk

With two seperate usb devices [the second of which is actually soldered to mym otherboard. Thanks ASUS!] I've found that unplugging other USB devices causes the wireless to kick out and you have to reconnect it (took me a while to figure out how to get around this with my soldered on one)

Just an update (and a small review).

I bought the Encore PCI wireless adapter that was suggested by l33t-g4m3r.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833180052
It was $24.99 and a few dollars for shipping. Of course Newegg had it to me in 2 days.
Installation was simple and took less than 5 minutes.
Used the enclosed CD to load the driver, and I was connected to the internet in just a few short minutes, and it's WPA2 encrypted.
So far the speed seems just as fast as it was when it was hard wired to the router.
I couldn't be more pleased with the whole experience.
Great advice here. Great service from Newegg. Great performance from the product.
Thanks to everyone.
