Router recommendation for home network

Sun Dec 13, 2009 8:49 pm

My D-Link DI 804HV seems to have finally died . Now I am looking for a new wired router with no more than 4 ports all I need is simple reliable device that won't require a reboot every hour unlike my old D-Link. Since there are two major manufacturers D-Link and Linksys (correct me if I am wrong) and my experience with D-Link has been less than stellar largely due to constant drop outs I would like to hear some feedback about Linksys. If there are other brand names I would like to hear about them too.

What are the rest of the components in your network? Would you benefit from a gigabit router?

I currently have a D-Link router (DIR-655). I like it better than my previous Netgear and Linksys routers.

With wireless being nearly ubiquitous, you may find a wireless router cheaper than a wired one. You can turn off the wireless access point in the router configuration and just use the wired portion.

How long have you been using DIR-655 for and does it ever drop connection? Because my old DI804HV had worked fine for at least two years then it started dropping connection more and more often it was so frustrating I decided to disconnect it completely.

Probably the single best of the older "g" generation of routers was the D-link DGL-4300 model. Currently, the Netgear WNDR3700 is probably the best of the "n" generation; however, there's still room for improvement, especially with range in the 5GHz band.

If all you really want is a wired router, you might be able to pick up the non-wireless D-link DGL-4100 very inexpensively. It's identical to the DGL-4300 except that it lacks the radio transceiver.
