Comcast is interfering with my Torrent Traffic!

Wed Jan 27, 2010 8:11 pm

Starting about 2 or 3 weeks ago, when I turn on uTorrent, my internet connection goes down for a few seconds every couple of minutes and I mean it goes down at the modem. The Cable light turns yellow and the status light goes off. In couple of minutes the connection comes back online, but only for a couple of minutes and it will go off again.

If I turn off uTorrent, the problem goes away and never happens again unless I turn uTorrent on again.

The only thing I can think of is that Comcast us turning off my cable connection to punish me for using a Bit Torrent program.

What should I do?

Do you have the 250GB cap in your area?

This happens to me occasionally on Road Runner as well -- I assumed it was them being jackasses but recently I saw another thread and am wondering if it's just the modem going crazy with the connections, because I can always get it back by just restarting the modem.

Everybody's got the 250GB cap. It's still very hard to hit if you're 100% legal.

To the OP:

What's the make/model of the cable modem?
If you have a router, make/model?
What's the maximum number of concurrent TCP requests configured in uTorrent?
Are you getting Event ID 4226 on a regular basis?

We can work from there.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

What's the make/model of the cable modem? D-Link DCM-202

If you have a router, make/model? Netgear WGTT624 (This computer is hardwired)

What's the maximum number of concurrent TCP requests configured in uTorrent? Are you asking for the max number of active torrents?

Are you getting Event ID 4226 on a regular basis? I dont see this event listed at all.

There's a firmware update for Comcast users here:

I had one of those and when I was into torrents it simply didn't have enough memory to handle the big routing tables torrents can create.

No, the maximum number of simultaneous TCP "open connection" requests that uTorrent will issue. If uTorrent tries to open new TCP connections at a rate faster than the modem or router can handle, or tries to open more than the memory resources on the modem or router can remember, the component that's run out of physical resources will just barf and refuse to play along.

Torrenting and not seeing 4226? Now I'm really confused.

I will update the firmware tomorrow, thanks for that.

I have not had a problem with torrents before, so I am not sure the router is the issue since the modem is the decive that is showing disconect when this problem happens.

As for the "open connections" is there a setting to limit this somewhere? I looked and nothing was obvious, but again I have changed nothing and this was not a problem until a couple of weeks ago.

As for the Even ID, I looked in the Windows event log and did not see this ID number listed anywhere, but its entirely possible that I missed the specific place I needed to look for it at.

Oh and thanks for all your help up to this point. 8)

Under the Preferences dialog, select Bandwidth, there is a whole section on "Number of Connections" for you to play with. Start with the Global maximum first and tweak as you like.

OK, at this point I can safely say that the problem is NOT Comcast.

A contact checked my account for me and it was clean.

So it must be something to do with my Modem and/or UTorrent.

When I get home, I will work on some settings and see what happens.

It's your router, same thing happens to me when I use utorrent. too many incoming connections for the router to handle so basically you're getting ddos'd. did resetting the router do anything?

Yeewww, caps, I'm lucky I dont have to deal with them. At the trial run of ADSL back in 99 or so, there was caps, since the final product came out, no caps, ever.

That said, except for only a 10Mbit upstream, I really like the fact that i can get a 100/10 cable docsis 3 connection with ease, nad it performs, too bad my router only has 100mbit interfaces because directly to the laptop on its gigabit interface, the connection delivered 130/12.

It seems cranking down the amount of connections in Utorrent has stopped the problem.

I still thinks its wierd that I have been running uTorrent for months with no problems and in just the last 2-3 weeks this problems popped up. :-?

The few times I've used uTorrent, I found that anything over 175 connections really bogs it down. Comcast in central Illinois here.

Could be Sandvine interfering with your connection, or otherwise.
