Router with Printer Server - Recommendations

Postposted on Sun Mar 07, 2010 3:39 pm

I am looking to replace my old crappy router and I think I would really like a router with a printer server. I might also want to connect to a security device as well (Think outside camera).

I am hoping to tap into the vast reservoir of gerbil knowledge.

Ideas?

It really isn't worth the money. There are better optoins out there.

1. USB -> Ethernet converter - You just plug your existing printer into the existing router
2. Network or WiFi ready Printer - Nicest option their is. The wifi makes so much since, given how little most of us print.

What did you end up with?

I just picked up aTrendnet TE100-P11, it's a print server only, because I need to replace an old Pentium box that still works fine but moves a little too much dust around. I really don't think there's much difference in commodity networking hardware though, it's mainly about the aftermarket firmware options (if you care) and the supported printer protocols.

I got a D-Link DIR-655

So far its real rock solid, no droped connections and great speeds.

Looks like mine was a good buy, particularly if someone needs an actual LPT port. I previously had my Pentium box configured as a floppy-boot device with a static IP, and my LaserJet 4L running via a TCP/IP port. So I forced the TrendNet device out of DHCP mode to the same static IP that the Pentium box was using, and everything worked exactly the same as before, no other configuration needed. Bonus: this device uses low-intensity green LEDs for the indicators, so I don't have yet another Blue Laser of Death trying to burn my eyes out.

I did get one entertaining piece of Engrish from the configuration utility when I searched for a firmware update with a disabled Ethernet device. This apparently means "The connection attempt timed out":
