windows 7 wont network

ok i have a desktop emachine and a toshiba laptop. They both are on the router and can get internet but can't homegroup each other or see each other. I can network the router but not the computers... any body got ideas i have dont everything windows told me to and google told me to. i'm lost. the desktop has windows 7 64 bit and the laptop has 7 32 bit if that matters.
dell inspiron 1545 laptop, duo core 2.3 ghz processor, 3 gigs of PC2-6400(400 MHz) ddr2 ram, 200mhz bus speed, 800 mhz FSB. 45nm, 35w, socket p (478), 1mb L2 cache, and a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family "graphics card".

Both of them treating the network as a "Home" network? Network and Sharing Center, there's a little section for Active Networks - make sure they're both on "Home" network type. Caught me out a few times, hopefully it's something as simple as that.

trust me i wish. they are both on home network.

Try killing the firewall on both of them & see if that works. If it does, you know what you have to fiddle with.

edit: Can they ping each other? By hostname or by IP address?

funny you mention that. I never did ping them. Which i go to school for networking and its the first thing they showed me. Anyhow i pinged from both sides and now it works. Its the simple things you miss...
