High gain antenna on router or card?

Wed Jun 23, 2010 1:26 pm

So I am going to get an 8-10 dbi antenna and am not sure if it would be better to install it on the router or just the desktop. Any suggestions? Is 8-10 a good gain?

Would a higher gain antenna imrove connection speeds?

Before you buy something, try out a parabolic reflector made of cardboard and aluminum foil. Build three or four and put them on all the antennas involved.

Another option, though more expensive, is to use a wireless bridge. The idea is that you use another router, like a Linksys WRT54GL running a 3rd party firmware like Tomato, and have it do the heavy lifting.

Of course this option doesn't make use of 802.11n specs, just 11g. For 11n you might be better off just getting a new router:

But that would just be nuts.
