Honestly I find these test useless and completely inaccurate as the size of the file is too small to accurately test your connection. Why do I say that? These tests are from a remote server that is on a 100Mb port yet look at that speed test result. Plus the results aren't very reliable as they jump around (see the next two results, one in the same city as my server and the other one farther away). If you really want to test your speed you should try something like ftping a large file to a remote server.

Uh, how do you know that? Lots of servers have gigabit connections.

Or maybe you've just discovered that when you have a high-bandwidth connection, your download speed depends greatly on the available capacity of the other server and the lines connecting you. Closer servers don't always provide higher bandwidth connections.

When you approach a server hosting company and have them host a server for you one of the things you pay for is port speed and since your paying for that it gives you that info on the product specs of the server. Also look at the ISP. ServerBeach is a self managed dedicated server hosting company. That means I (the customer) have full control over the server since in a nutshell they put the hardware together, install the base OS, and then walk away. So when I use RDC to connect to the server I can view what the network connection is as I have administrative control of the server. I can attempt to change the port speed all I want but guess what? They have the switch's port set to 100Mb so I only get a 100Mb connection max.

You could have just said you were the operator on the server in question.

If by chance you're not and are extrapolating based on a server you buy from that ISP, realize that data centers don't necessarily have standardized equipment. I work at a web hosting company and we have servers with both 100Mb and Gigabit connections. It's not based on age either; it's just that most servers don't need that kind of bandwidth and the switches and routers required to handle lots of gigabit connections are more expensive.

Your right I could have said that but since from your post you didn't seem to understand how someone could tell what type of connection a server has I didn't know your level of knowledge so I felt it best to explain things a little bit more.

FIOS FTW!

Actually, it's only 25Mb FIOS, but my FreeBSD server may be causing some burstiness that causes speedtest.net to over-estimate the speed. It seems like it takes it a bit to start, them boom it's done with a higher throughput than it should really be.

This is what happens when Comcast is broken, your service appointment is 2 days away, and you're running off a USB tether on a rooted Droid using PdaNet. Good thing I'm still on the original unlimited plan.

I don't like that people keep posting shots of their tethered internet, and it is faster than my DSL.

Then prepare to feel more sad.

Using the Nokia N8 over AT&T, I tried a few servers and I picked the best one out of 3-4 that I tried.

WiFi tethering using JoikuSpot free:

Bluetooth tethering using Windows 7:

I tried USB tethering using the included Nokia PC Internet Access and I could not even get a test session completed. Before the transfer hit 1MB the program just got stuck and refused to route packets anymore. :evil:

Hardly matters, does it though? What most people use their super speeds for is illegal. And most of the things people actually do with it legally, the networks and media industries are trying to force you to pay for.

The best part is that connections beyond 10Mbps are practically worthless (save VPNs/Backbones) as the vast majority of servers online do not allocated that much bandwidth to a single client. It is also difficult to find a torrent that allows you to leech that much bandwidth.

I have a 3Mbit connection. About the only time I feel the desire for a faster connection is when I buy something on Steam. Otherwise I can't really recall when my normal usage would benefit from paying $30 more a month for a 15Mbit connection. I'm more jealous of the guys posting from across the pond. Those 100/100 connections for $30 a month are awesome.
