Navigating The Wireless Router Ocean.

Postposted on Tue Dec 14, 2010 7:21 pm

I just moved into a new apartment with my lovely girlfriend and I had to abandon my DIR-655 at my parents house for their use. I pretty much made the decision to purchase that router due to your recommendations so here I am once again. Should I just order another DIR-655? I don't want to spend over $100 and the closer to the $75 mark the better. I was looking at the Netgear WNR3500L on newegg for $78 but I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to wireless routers. I'm looking for something thats N band and has Gigabit ethernet ports. I'm also willing to try my hand at open source firmware as well. Thanks for the help.

If you're in a small apartment there's no reason for N if the wireless network is only for 'Net connectivity.

I stream HD video to my PS3 as well as host small LANs every once in a while. Our apartment actually covers more area than my parents house too... theres just no second floor.

Well the best you can get for a consumer router right now is the WNDR3700 http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-Wireless-Gigabit-Router-WNDR3700/dp/B002HWRJY4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1292379829&sr=8-1

You should be able to get them for about $150 or a little more. The DIR-655 is still a good choice but its getting old. You can also give the Asus RT N16 a try as well. http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-RT-N16-Wireless-802-11b-external/dp/B002SISM5W/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1292379943&sr=1-1
To Start Press Any Key'. Where's the ANY key?

You know, boys, a nuclear reactor is a lot like a woman. You just have to read the manual and press the right buttons.
