Ok while at work I ran across my companies Cisco TV/IP system. Of course I got to thinking about how neat that'd be at home. But as always Cisco's price is pretty high up there, so does anyone know of any home product that can do live streaming TV over IP? Preferably one that will allow clients to watch seperate channels.

From what I can tell it does some sort of mpeg streaming from a server to client.

Ok, here's my unofficial knowledge of how TV over IP works...

Mpeg 2 encoding can range in scope from 4 MBps to 10 uncompressed. Don't ask me what that is uncompressed, but a bit of general knowledge here and there (a 17GB double sided double layered DVD can hold about 8 hrs Mpeg2) tells me it's about 600KB/s compressed [(17*1024)/(8*60*60)]... so we need a system that can transmit that much data...

Enter things like VDSL (Very Fast Digital subscriber line) that can do 5MBps easy. Then you send the data for a TV program over the fone line (well, data line) and the TV is your new antique

That's what I understand anyways,

Uncompressed broadcast quality MPEG gets up to DS-3 data rates.
You are false data.

No wonder television's a medium. It's so seldom rare or well done. -Mighty Mouse
