Anybody find the commercial that plays when you visit Apple.com a little odd? What's the message Apple is trying to send? (This is re: the Tree Trimming video ad)

Yeah, I don't quite get it, either. Seems like someone was napping in an advertising meeting that day.

I don't see their ads, I refuse to install software I never need. They should make their ads using Flash.

He's talking about their television ad, and they DO make their online ads in flash.

Seems like they're going for some kind of peace offering to "PC" in a way... Spirit of the season or whatever. Pretty funny but still as stupid as all the previous ones. I've never really understood what any of the PC vs Mac ads ment. "Hello, I'm a pretentious idiot who buys a certain brand because it's hip!"

Yeah Meadows, spending a whole 20 sec and as many Megs on a QT Lite installation is a real pita...

I don't think it was a peace offering. I think PC set up the lights like that on purpose, because he looks a little embarrassed.

Still, a dumb ad.

Peace offering from Mac to PC, hence the embarrased PC!

Yeah right.
Also, if their ads played on my computer, then I probably wouldn't bitch about the QuickTime install I'm asked to do, particularly since I don't need extra software for the exact same thing my current software do (redundancy is bad, mmm'kay).

Off-topic: I wouldn't see their TV ads even if I wanted to - neither Apple nor Microsoft air their junk over here, really.

Yeesh, man. Sounds like you'd run from a room if an Apple commercial started playing...

Meadows might get brain damaged by those Windows: Life without Walls ads being shown here in India.

The ad seems to imply that Microsoft is advertising their supremacy no matter the season, even when people would like to look away from brand fights for a bit. At least that's what I think.

I'm not sure about India, but it's a pretty crowded place, fit for advertisements. I personally couldn't care less, I took out my TV three years ago right after installing WoW. I noticed I wouldn't watch it anymore.

As much as I love Apple products, I hate their PR.

It's not that I'm a big fan of ads neither. I haven't owned a TV for several years (I dl what I want to watch) and I use Adblock plus in FF so my browsing is pretty ad-free and the ones that do appear and annoy me, I block, including flash and qt.

I agree that when there is a de facto standard, such as flash, it's pretty dumb to be using something else, such as qt, but it's apple we're talking about! And qt can be used for other stuff than playing web ads, like all my old video clips downloaded in .mov format... So it's not all redundant.

You said the a-word regarding browsing. I'm afraid that's a no go.

Discussion of ad-blocking software is prohibited by rule #12. Well, your discussion of using it may not be totally prohibited. I dunno. That's why I'm not a mod. (actually, I'm not a mod because I occasionally lose my cool and I can't pretend to be unbiased...)

And you spelled emperor wrong.

i disagree with that rule; it implies that just because someone mentions ad-blocking, or uses ad-blocking, that all ads (thus one ones here) are blocked. which is not the case; typically you block only the annoying ads. the ones on tr don't seem so bad compared to other ads, or other forms or advertising (stupid in-text nonsense).

also, "philosophical discussions" are still ok. if interpreted literally, Imperor is fine since there were no "links, hints, recommendations or suggestions" being made, just a statement.

that's my position on flash. websites that use it exclusively are not websites i care to go to, and flash advertising is annoying as hell! i can live without youtube videos as well.

Disagree with the rule or not, it's the rule of the forum. You can set up a forum devoted to ad blocking software and nobody will mind. Bitching about it in a thread won't get you anywhere. Actually, bitch about it in this thread and save us all the trouble, eh?

I watched the add and the only thing it made me think is oh the PC doofus thought he was was cool putting the lights on the tree what way. I think everybody is reading way to much into the commercial myself.

I tried adblock once years ago and found the blank boxes where the adds should have been more distracting than the adds themselves. The only exception to the rule is any add that plays sound they piss me off like you can't even imagine.
