Atheros AR5BXB6 that came with a real macbook, WPA2 support?

Sat Jun 20, 2009 9:32 pm

Hi all,

I'm planning to purchase an Atheros AR5BXB6 miniPCIe (coming from a real macbook) and put it in my Sony VGN-CR140E laptop. I'm going to use it to dual boot Windows Vista and OSX Leopard (hack). The link from Ebay only tells that it came from a macbook with some details of compatibility. I'm pretty much sure that it will fit in my Sony Vaio.

This is the ebay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-MacBook-Pro-AR5BXB6-Airport-Wireless-Card-802-11G_W0QQitemZ380131588415QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item58819bb93f&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A15|66%3A2|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

I need to know if this card can support WPA2 encryption inside OS X from a real macbook. It would be a bonus if someone could tell me if this card works properly in a Hackintosh and support WPA2.

I also need to know that if I run this in Vista, will I be having problems with Windows drivers (since it came from a real mac)? Do I have to pull out drivers from Vista Bootcamp? Will this support WPA2 in Vista as well?

I'm planning to buy tomorrow and I really hope that someone could give me info about this.

I'm also deciding on getting Dell 1390 /1490, but it uses broadcom drivers. According to some people, it ain't good. I don't know how reliable those info are, but it would be great if you could let me know your experience with the Dell miniPCIes in Hackintoshes/Windows-WPA2.

Thank you so much.

Sorry for my poor english.

If it came from a mac, you will have zero issues with it in OS X and with WPA2.

Yeah, anything that is even based on a chipset that Apple uses should show up as Airport and should have no problems with WPA2.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

THanks guys. Do you think I'll be having problem with the drivers from either Linux or Windows? Thanks again.

Windows drivers included on your retail OS X DVD. Boot Camp won't allow itself to be installed, but you can browse the disc to install them. Dunno about Linux.

Thanks! I think I'll give this a go. You've been a great help.
