iPhone OS 3.1

Wed Sep 09, 2009 10:12 pm

Alright, so iTunes 9 and OS 3.1 bricked my iPhone.

I've tried two failed restores, and I'm hoping that it'll take the 3rd time, after restarting the computer and plugging my USB cable directly into the back of my computer.

Grr... this is the first problem I've had with my iPhone, and it's a doozy. My phone backup better take once I get this thing un-bricked.

Sounds like your bootloader got hosed somehow. To fix it, you need to put your iPhone in DFU mode, NOT in Restore mode as iTunes does by default.

Once in DFU, the iPhone will accept a new bootloader from iTunes with no problems and you will be able to restore your backup.

How to put it in DFU mode, a quick Google search reveals this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiTcKMZfyfk

Given the title I guess this is the general 3.1 thread. Has anybody (on AT&T) upgraded to 3.1 and tried any of the tethering hacks? I keep seeing that it's been nixed by 3.1, but all those stories seem to refer to putting your phone in testing/diagnostic mode rather than simply modifying the carrier file like via one of the website downloads.
Until AT&T provides real tethering (and it damn well better be less than $40/month; I barely use their network for anything else so that $70/month is otherwise pure profit) I need this far more than I need an OS update.

I agree and those of us that have AT&T for an ISP well.....we should get some kind of bundle/discount!

You won't get a bundle. I'm pretty sure they're 'different' companies. Much the same as Verizon Wireless and the FiOS division are completely separate.

I am pretty sure it can be done because my Direct tv/ land line phone/ DSL all come on one AT&T bill everymonth and all of those services are bundled saving me at least 150 bucks each month if I were to get them separately....

Hi, welcome to AT&T where we nickel-and-dime our customers. Coming soon: Charging iPhone customers for tethering when we already force them to pay $30/month for unlimited data.
Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work, you can always hit them with it.

I could care less about at&t but in its defense almost everyone charges extra for tethering. It would cost me an extra 30 dollars for tethering on my bb (VZW 30 bb plan).

I heard 3.1 is not compatible with jailbreak. Maybe you had a jailbreaked phone that's why it's bricked?

Then again, I don't have an iPhone, so I have no clue.

What is the point of jailbraking, do you do that?

There was a nice comparison of all the major US providers in the US at Engadget a few months ago. Verizon was by far the most expensive. Extra chargers for tethering are the norm, sadly.

I didn't mean to say that AT&T was the only one charging for tethering, far from it. Just that it's ridiculous that if I were to decide to use tethering on my iPhone, I have to pay an additional fee on top of my mandatory $30/month "unlimited" data plan. So I'm already paying for unlimited data, but it's only unlimited if that data comes from the iPhone natively? That's ****, and we all know it. Unlimited means unlimited. Could one argue (i.e. class action lawsuit) that AT&T is guilty of false advertising? I'm paying for unlimited data, but not actually getting it, should I decide to use tethering.

I know there's the argument that AT&T would incur an influx of stress on their network if they didn't charge for tethering, but to me, it's shady at best. How about finally getting around to beefing up your infrastructure instead of blaming users for crippling the network?

They're charging you for the ability to transfer the data to another device via the iPhone, not for additional data. Though you're "unlimited' data isn't unlimited either. Your lawsuit would go absolutely no where, the practice is common for the entire industry. I don't like it at all but to complain specifically about AT&T doing it with the iPhone is limiting the scope when in reality it is a much bigger problem than that and is simply another example of how ridiculous our entire telecommunication system is. We're charged services that are not different from the hardware stand point. But, AT&T and the rest stand to make much more charging them as services rather than data.

Just like AT&T arguing that "gaming" support is not part of the term broadband to the FCC. AT&T claims gaming is another one of those great "services."

Ehh, I just priced att and VW it's not as big as your making it. In fact it's the same price for me to have a bb on either one 89.98.
BIS/Texting/450 minutes. Even the family plan would cost me the same.
