So what's next?

Thu Jan 28, 2010 10:46 am

For Apple followers, history has been a series of rumors about revolutionary devices, denials, then released products that were somewhat relevant to the original rumor. The iPod, the iPhone, and now the iPad are just the latest examples. The thing is, we're more or less out of new device categories. Apple has pretty much fulfilled all the products it has been rumored to be working on.

So what's next? Will Apple work on refining all the new products? Will they find new niches that we haven't conceived of? Will they take an obscure product category and make it mainstream? Do we see a renewed emphasis on computer hardware? How about their software?

What do you guys think?

It will be something with AppleTV and/or some sort of subscription service for iTunes movies and tv shows. The device itself has gone untouched since 2007.

The rumors of some kind of subscription service for TV and movies also involve a rumor that it wont be tied to a device. Which makes me think iTunes as that spans all of Apples products.

It's time for i3/i5 Macbook Pros with higher DPI and 16:9 screens (1600x900 15.6" and standard 1920x1080 17", for example) and Gulftown Mac Pros. I don't think there's any question that this is the next product release.

They'll probably think of something else off the wall, but I don't expect more than 1 a year.

I think they'll just make TVs. They already make computer monitors and they have their Apple TV product. They could integrate the two and make an Internet connected TV. It's the exact kind of market that Apple enters. It's been done before, but the market's not quite mature yet.

Is that really something that people want? If anything they'll start removing optical drives. I can understand a Blu-Ray player on a large screen, but on a screen that small it doesn't make much sense.

It's something the people want, it's just not something Apple wants. You should be getting your movies from iTunes.

I'd like to see them focus on maybe HMPCs. If they could pull some magic out of thier hat--like with the iPod or iPhone--in that segment it'd be wonderful. I don't actually think they will, I just think it'd be nice :) One thing I've admired about Apple is that they can blow new product categories wide open--anyone remember the MP3 market before the iPod? Even though I don't think the iPod's hardware was that great, they launched it alongside what was, at the time, the most convienent way to get music onto an MP3 player. What a difference that made. Now if they could bring that to bear on something more than AppleTV, maybe tying it into the iTunes system for content...and strong arming the MPAA to work out a way to rip DVD's and/or BluRays to it's HDD...that'd be potent.

I'd also still like them to put out an iPad with handwriting capability...Jobs, I'll sell you my spare kidney for one. C'mon, I know you need it :D
