What can I do with a 850W PSU?

Sun Mar 08, 2015 10:15 am

OK I brought a EVGA SuperNova 850B2 850W Bronze PSU from a friend Friday night for $50 due to me owing him a favor. Now here is the problem, I have no use for this and even if I did it would be way overkill for anything I would use it for.

I see three options here:

1. Keep it as a spare.
2. Find someone who's building a computer and sell it him.
3. An excuse to upgrading to the GTX 970 or 980. Even then this still might be overkill.

My current system has a Seasonic 550W PSU.

That would be a good option. But I don't know anyone offhand in person that build computers.

Realistically 970/980 GPUs only need that much power if you are going to SLI them... Sell it on ebay. If it goes anything like the GPUs I have been watching you will likely double your money.
Windows10, EVGA G2 750w Power Supply, Acer XB270H G-synch monitor, MSI Krait Gaming 3X, I7 6700K, 16 gigs of CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 MHz ram, Crucial 500 gig SSD, EVGA GTX1080 FTW

I didn't think that those GPUs needed this much power.

Should that be installed above or below the motorized drinks tray?
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Depends on whether you prefer hot or cold drinks.

I have heard stories from people who repaired computers for others about systems that DIED becauses the owners smoked while using them.

No, no, no. Get a custom case and put a nice big 12V fridge in it. Or a space heater. Use a 12VDC->120VAC inverter if you must.

Or maybe get a mobo and case that will let you fit, say, 4 GPUs in it? A few 980's together ought to load up that power supply nicely for folding. And fry your wallet. :)

Then plug the computer back into the 120V and call your local friendly service tech to find out why nothing's working. Or, if it does work, do a kick-starter for a perpetual motion machine.

Anyone who can predict the mass of the Higgs Boson, within a factor of two, 14 years before $10B was spent on the LHC to search for it, gets my respect.

I'd keep it as a spare if I didn't have one, otherwise regift/sell/whatever. 850W is massive overkill for most builds, though an all-AMD system might be able to make use of it.

According to this Anandtech review and the ratings on Amazon, etc, it looks to be a halfway decent unit. Was it used or new? It's always nice to have a good spare around.

Thanks for the link. The PSU is brand new. The first computer I built the PSU went bad. That taught me to buy the case and PSU separate.

Yeah, the PSUs that come bundled with cases (especially inexpensive ones) tend to be pretty bad. Unless you plan to use them at less than 1/2 of their rated capacity don't even bother; even if you intend to run them lightly loaded don't expect them to last long, and don't be surprised if they take something else with them when they crap out. This sad state of affairs has been true at least as far back as the '90s; anyone else remember the atrocious "Deer" brand PSUs that many case vendors bundled back then?

That was the PSU that went bad on me. And you are right I was lucky it didn't take anything else with it.
