PSU question

Mon Feb 23, 2004 5:44 pm

Im in the market for a new PSU and case right now but I'm confused about all these ATX types.

Right now I have a Intel P4 Garibaldi D850GB mobo and a 250W generic. I can't figure out what the difference is between these:

ATX 12V 1.2
ATX +12V 1.1
ATX +12V 1.2
ATX +12V 1.3

Whats the difference between a 12V and a +12V? I was under the impression all ATX PSU are compatible with any ATX mobo, or did the socket 423 need a different P4 support then the socket 478 cpu.

basicly if that's an issue you need to get a better brand
unless you're running a server board, you should get any 350 watt + power supply by one of these manufacturers

antec
enermax
thermaltake
sparkle
fortron (spell? what's that one a few of you have?)
I would suggest something cheap from one of those brands

Many newer motherboards require a PSU with a special 4-pin connector (in addition to the normal ATX motherboard connector), which supplies extra +12V current to the motherboard's VCore regulators. If you have a motherboard with one of these 4-pin power sockets, you need to have a PSU with the matching connector on it (that's what the "12V" and "+12V" mean in the PSU names).

If your motherboard doesn't have the extra +12V socket, and you buy an ATX 12V PSU, just leave the square 4-pin connector from the PSU unconnected.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
