Damn!!!

Fri May 24, 2002 8:53 am

Why do companies do this to me!! I was reading PC World the other day and came across an ad for Alienware. I don't know if any of you have seen their cases but damn they are so cool looking. I went to their site to get a price on one, and found the bad news. They do not sell their cases separately. :x The only way to get one is to buy a complete system.
Once again...Why do companies do this to me!!

If any one wants a look go to http://www.alienware.com

The cases are standard Antec & other cases with custom paint jobs. It wouldn't be hard to do one yourself. Think of it as an introduction to case modding.

I'm not so impressed with the colour(although a bright yellow does look cool), but rather the design of the case itself.

ExcessOrder: are you saying that I can get this case from Antec?

It doesn't have stuff like a blowhole or the other extras that Alienware adds, but that would be an easy first mod. A friend of mine just got one of these, and he loves it. It is pretty big, but not supermicro huge. Its got a bunch of fans pre-installed. Its east to work with. And its only $120 + 20 shipping, and that includes a 400 watt PS.
If you're looking for a new case, this one should be on your short list.

I think what hoser is needing a towel over is the embossed 'Alienware' that runs up the left side of the front panel. I believe that is done in Photoshop and the case itself isn't actually embossed. I have seen a number of other system builders with the exact same case except that the name embossed on the left of the front of the case is different.

That's great guys...thanx lots. :D
I'm going to see if I can find a place in Canada, so I don't have to pay a huge amount for shipping.

Hey Hoser, check this out, eh?

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.a ... 502&DEPA=1

Newegg.com has a Chieftec case that looks just like those Alienware cases, and this one is just $39 (no P/S or fans)! I've got one of these, the're the stuff (but REALLY heavy!)!

Hoser.........I have those Antic cases in Black, they are expensive and come without a power supply (in Moncton NB) they do come from the wholesaler in Toronto, so they should be cheaper to you where you are. If you are 'stuck' and really need one I will be up your way in a couple of weeks (Ottawa, Peterborough, TO, Hamilton) to save on shipping.
drop me a line if you can't find them locally. ([email protected])

Thanx again all for all your help. :D

After doing some research on the case I found out it's going to cost me around $210. Seeing as how I just bought a house i think it's going to be a few months before I get one. I can't seem to find a local supplier for the Chieftec one, but I'm still looking.

Thanx for the offer mrfixit100, but like I said it's going to be a while before I get one. What is the name of that supplier you were talking about in TO, maybe they will be a bit cheaper.

I'll look at my invoicing today and see what kind of a deal I can 'cook-up'. I think they came from 'tech-data', but they are strictly wholesale, I believe I had to buy 6 to get them to eat the shipping.
They certainly are an impressive case, a FAR cry from the 'generic' junk I sell lots of.
A more economical solution is a A-Open case, KF-45 comes to mind, though generally, all A-Open cases are better quality then the generic junk and a little more expensive. Again, you should be able to source them closer to where you are.

Here is a 'baseline' you should be looking at:
Antac SX1030B/300W/Black $180+tax
A-Open HX08/300W $140+tax
A-Open KF45/300W $80+tax
Generic junk 250W $42, 300W $52 again +tax

There is a fairly comprehensive selection of cases here:
http://www.computergoodies.ca/cat23_1.htm
a little closer to you than I am.

Tech Data is one of our distributors so no worries there.

ExcessOrder,
If you look around the antec website, they now sell side panels (over the video card and cpu) with blowholes, which would be a 35 second replacement. (including unwrapping and finding the key) These cases are sweet, I have one right now. My brother liked it so much he went out and bought the Cheiftec version, but he didn't get any case fans, the nifty case badge, or the power supply.

I think it's up to you to find the brand you want, but I strongly recommend this case. Top notch.
