Need opinions for new computer case

Fri Jul 02, 2004 6:21 pm

Its going to house my current rig after i (stupidly) bent the side panel to hell and back during summer move out from my dorm.

Anyhow, I have to get a new case ebcause i hate the one i have now anyhow, money isnt really a problem but id like to keep it under 200. I was looking at a thermaltake tsunami. Id like some input. Quiet, clean lines, not insanely ugly are a must. The tsunami looks clean, has nice curves and lines, and is quiet. Aluminum is nice too because i frequent lans often.

Throw me some links and let me hear some suggestions.

I am personally a big fan of the Antec Sonata.

I havent used one myself, but I've been drooling over it for quite some time.

So how fast is your car, anyway?

Oh, about 1200mhz.

:D I second the Antec Sonata, excellent case built for quietness (in piano black). Also consider the Antec 3700 range, the AMB (metallic bronze) and BQE (std non-piano black, quieter edition). These all use 120mm fan mounts in the optimal bottom-front and top-rear placements, 120mm allow you to push more air with less noise. They're well built and come with a 120mm fan and an Antec PSU (which is about the best PSU brand out there). Last time I looked the Chenbro Xpider (Gaming Bomb) is also a fine choice, 80-92mm frontal intake and 80-91-120mm exhaust but as is quite common no PSU included there. There are 2 recent reviews of the successor of the Xpider (the Xpider II) ...

When you said a quiet case, i immediately thought SONATA

I have one myself, it certainly is quiet but in no way light. This case is pretty heavy compared to my other steel and aluminum cases. Not something you want to take to lans on a weekly basis.

I only have 1 complaint about this case though, the rubber feet, used to asorb vibrations and potentially sound/noise. I've been to 4 lans recently and of those 4 i lost 3 rubber feet. My case now wobbles on only 1 foot and it seems like the case pivots around the back right corner.

Other than that i have no complaints other than this case is damn heavy.

You might want to consider an antec super lan boy or case that was "designed" for lans

Sorry to digress, but out of interest, in this context what are 'lans'?

Lans are places where a bunch of gamers meet. Sort of like this:

a bunch of friends or friends on the internet agree on a date and location to meet up and bring their computers so they can enjoy a day(s) of non-stop gaming with really low pings.

aluminum cases are nice because they're light but they also damage and dent easier because they're more fragile than steel cases

The term 'lan' is a typical internet abbreviation, in that it completely cuts out the part of the phrase that makes sense.

It's short for LAN Party, a LAN being a Local Area Network.

As for what that actually means, redmouse explained it fairly well.

;) A Shuttle (or similar SFF) might be the best choice then, esp with how they have moved on in recent times.

well.. if money is not a factor:
http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/cst-111.html

that one wouldnt work for lan parties.. but nice for home.

the only flaw is not floppy drive space.. would have to get a 3.5 to 5.25 spacer to use a floppy.
