You could probably get away with a 300W Power Supply but if you plan on having a lot of components (extra hard drives, fast video card, etc.) then I would go with at least 350W or better yet 400W. That way you are sure to have enough power for all your components.

I recomend Antec Power Supplies. You can find some good deals on them at http://www.newegg.com.

I'd say if you're going to go the average route (single 7200rpm hard drive, single cpu, recent graphics card, etc.) then a decent 350W will take care of all that. If you start adding more hungry components (dual 10,000rpm SCSI drives, single oc'ed CPU, oc'ed Ti4600 etc.) then a 400W would be recommended.

As you're going for a 1700+, I'd say get a branded 350,

Hi, I agree with everyone else, 300w should provide you with all your computing needs, but you don't mention the rest of you systems spec, so I can't tell you exactly, but if your having multiple IDE deices e.g 2 HDD's, CDRW's, etc, with a power hungry graphics card like a GF4 Ti4600 for example, then a 350w will be more sensible.

does the brand of the case really matter, or can I just get a cheap $30 buck case?

I find that unbranded, generic cases aren't as well made as something from a good solid brand. You don't want to have sharp edges and crappy construction.

You can find good cases for under $50. I like Antec myself but there are other good brands out there.

Sample set up: Xp1800, Geforce 2 gts, 512MB DDR (epox board, I don't remember the model), 1 maxtor 7200 60 GB HD, 2 other 5400 HD's, CD rom, SoundBlaster Live, Nic, 4 case fans. All powered by the PP303X.

That's my roommates system. I was all set to get him a 400 or True380 but he doesn't need it at this point.
