remember when I de-dusted?

Sat Mar 22, 2003 7:32 pm

well, when I got the dust out of my system, I put a filter on my 120mm intake.

it was green last week.

it is grey with dust now.... kinda sick what was going through week after week

now question: what is the most efficiant way to filter? the lowest resistance way to filter out most dust and all hair?

Wow, you do live in a dusty place. Is the room you keep your computer in open aired?

I just keep my room vacuumed and my computer wiped every now and then. I guess if you don't notice it, it wouldn't hurt. Does it affect temperatures significantly?

Sounds kinda like my situation (stuffy dorm room). My roommate got so frusterated that he bought a new case with a nice 120mm filtered intake. He opened it up after a few days and it was quite nasty.

I, on the other hand, simply use 5 80mm case fans to create a wind-tunnel effect in my computer :) The dust isn't given much of a chance to settle, but I also open it up and spray it with canned air a couple times a month.

I also keep a room air filter running most of the time, you would be suprised how much that thing absorbs.

ahhhh good idea

I'm using scotch brite sponge wiper things. I don't know what they're for, but they make nice filters at about 1/6 inch thick, and custom fitting. they let a decent ammount of air through, but I was wondering if there was something better

that room filter idea would work, when I move my computer out of where it is now, and into my room.

Not only that, but your lungs will profit from that situation as well.

I don't have that much of a dust problem in my main machine, probably do to the fact that I have a total of 5x case fans, 2x PSU fans, 2x HSF, 1x GPU fan. That does not give the dust much time to settle.

you think mine did? I had a 120mm blowing about 140CMF through my case.... there was a constant bombardment of air right on everythink. but my heatsink still managed to get dirty

I think winter is the dustiest month, the other monthes we have more air from outside, and the rain tends to clean it up quite a bit

Ok, here is a possible low tech solution...how about running the vacuum more often? It just might help.

That is true, and the house does need a good vacuuming... :(

I'm too lazy to vaccume more than once every few months, so I simply use a can of air. My system is no slouch on fans either (5 80mm case fans + processor fan + GPU fan + 2 PSU fans). Luckily not much of the dust settles and I keep my tower up on the desk away from the floor. Now that I think about it, I probably should blow out my system pretty soon...

My computer runs about 6-7C cooler at full load after being blown out.

I keep my cases on the desk also and it does seem to keep the dust level down in my case.

Ok, I just have to throw this idea out. Sometime ago, on some OC site (forgot where, sorry), some guy showed pictures of his extreme solution to the dust problem. He had mounted a truck engine filter...a nice chrome one... on the side of his case! He had enough space to fit 3 80mm fans right under the filter. Looked kind of cool, and he said it did a great job of keeping out the dust and letting the air flow.

I hate 80mm fans! I like to use 120's but now I just let the dust pour into my comp, cleaning it out every so often. 120's allow MUCH better case cooling, because of low pressures on both sides

Spot, not everyone has room for 120's in their cases without modifications. I use 80 mm Panaflo fans in my cases and they work fine. They are quiet and move a lot of air for their size.

To the dust problem....i just put in a good cleaning with soft rag and air every month as a must do maintenance schedule. You would be totally amazed at some customers puters that i work on.....he he...looks like someone emptied the dirt devil bag into the case!! Had one that had the HSF so plugged it would run for a very short while, then quit...repeat so on and so forth...when u tell them they should do this little chore every so often(I recommend every other month to customers)..they look at me with glazed..blank stare like.....why do that..

Yeah, they should invent some kind of system that goes through/to the HSF and the PSU, so that you could just connect the vacuum to it and suck it all in.

I just worked on one computer for a friend, and it was in terrible shape. She has 3 cats, and they cose was just absolutely full of hair. It was all stuck and mixed in with the dust and other nastiness. I had to bust out the shop vac to get that case cleaned out. It was one of the worst cases I ever worked on, it had never been cleaned out since it was built 5 years ago. I put it all in a bag and gave it back to her, and I told her to make sure to clean it out so it does not get that bad again.
