PSU fan

Wed Nov 12, 2008 7:29 pm

I recently built new system with FSP Group Blue Storm II 500W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104034 and it seem to be the single source of the noise. At first I assumed stock C2D fan was making my computer audible. But I determined that all noise is coming from the fan in PSU. It has own regulator inside PSU and not connected to the main board fan headers. I assume it regulates fan speed based on some sensor inside PSU ? Because when I power it on it stays quiet for a while. What would be the best way to make it silent ? Last time I opened FSP PSU - it had pretty good fan inside (Noktua I think). And I don't think connecting PSU fan to the main board header is good idea either - just to avoid not necessary fires in my home.

If it's quiet when the system starts up but gets noisier later, it suggests that the fan is thermally controlled by a sensor inside the PSU. Without taking it apart, you could try increasing cool airflow to the PSU area of the case, or another (or more powerful) exhaust fan to remove heat from the system before it gets to the PSU.
