Is this power supply ok?

Wed Jul 22, 2009 12:22 pm

Ok so I had a generic 400watt power supply in my comp that was slowly dieing and i didn't have a ton of money to order so i order a cheap one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817153023

All the power supply calculators i used said i only need like 320watts.

system specs are.

Gigabyte ultradurable GA-EP45-UD3P
intel core2duo e7400
ati hd4850
6 gig of ddr2
western digital black 500 sataII
dvd burner
dvd player
SB X-fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty Pro
besides that i have 2 120mm case fans.

Will this power supply hold up

just brew it!

I've had one of those fail, and another one that is currently suspect. I'd avoid.

Why?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371006

With free shipping this is probably cheaper.

Yours = 65% efficiency and who knows the quality or OEM manufacturer
Seasonic = 80 + efficiency and one of the best suppliers in the industry.

Say your system draws 150 watts.

@ 65% = 230 watts used
@ 81% = 185 watts used

DELTA 45 watts or on average in the US 45$ per year in additional energy cost.

This would be a good deal:
PC Power & Cooling Silencer PPCS370X 370W , http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817703018 $40 FS

Efficiency is definitly important these days.

That's a good deal on the PC Power & Cooling PSU.

The Antec Earthwatts or a Corsair CX400 would be good, too.

Very nice supply. Active PFC, 80+ efficiency, and 27A on +12V for $38? And from PP&C? Don't think twice, just get it.

You said SeaSonic and linked to an Antec -- which isn't a bad power supply either.

I think that this is the [url=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151061]SeaSonic[\url] that you meant. Nice 400 W, dual 12V rail, 80% efficient power supply.

The PC Power & Cooling looks nice, but the connector selection leaves something to be desired. It appears to have only 1 SATA and 4, 4-pin molex connectors.

The SeaSonic has 4 SATA and 5, 4-pin molex.

(Both have the normal mainboard power, a floppy power plug, and 1, 6-pin PCIe connector.)

Sorry for the confusion. :)

When I saw 430, I just assumed the listing was for Seasonic.
Seasonic is however the OEM of most of the ANTEC models in the earthwatts series, including this model.

I agree with everyone that Seasonic, Antec, and Corsair are currently making the best value power supplies on the market.

What really caught my eye from the OP was the 65% efficiency.
With so many good and reasonable priced models to choose from, why waste your money on a really poor performer. :(

In reference to the TT Power Supply.

This item is covered by Newegg.com's Standard Return Policy.

* Return for refund within: 30 days
* Return for replacement within: 30 days
* Restocking Fee: Yes

Return the TT and get the PP&C. You may be out a couple bucks, but it's worth it in the long run.

Depends, it will burn more power and be hotter! What is your electric cost? Do you leave your computer on 24/7 or just game on it and turn it off?
Do you live somewhere that requires air conditioning? If so you can double the $45 per year cost difference to run. (if running 24/7)
Time is money, and you want your system to run right? How hard is it to get in your case, how cramped is the wiring job of swapping out supplies? How much spare time do you have to mess around fixing your computer? Cost now in time to do right verse do over time?
These are all personal factors that you need to consider.

Me....I would use it until I saw a really good deal on a 80 + power supply and then swap it out.

For me a hot and loud power supply just grates on me like finger nails on the chalk board, but that's just me. :)
