Anetc 500w PSU sounds like a plane taking off

Postposted on Mon Dec 27, 2010 4:27 pm

I recently built a new computer. As you can see from the title, the power supply fan sounds like an airplane when I'm gaming!
Here is the build:
  • Phenom II X4 955 @3.72
  • Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3
  • 4gb ram kit
  • 1tb Caviar Blue
  • EVGA GTS 450

It's in an Antec Sonata III with the included 500W PSU. A calculator on Newegg said I only needed 430W, so I figured I would be okay with that PSU. Do I need a better PSU? If so, what should I get?

What size is the fan in that PSU? If it's small, and you're subjectively sensitive to airflow noises, I suspect that is normal. It's also probably a "tight fit" as far as the automatic fan-speed-up-routines go in PSUs.
Matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves... back to you with the weather, Bob!

Are you sure it's the PSU? The AMD stock cooler is an egregious offender when it comes to noise, especially if you have your CPU overclocked.

That's by far the loudest thing in my system. I'd replace it, but I'm just too lazy to take everything apart right now.

Or the PSU could have a bad fan.

Problem solved. I'm not sure why, but it's gotten much quieter since a few days ago.

Maybe the bearings needed to run in. In any case, I'm glad things worked out!
