Shorting Front USB Ports

Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:25 pm

I was plugging in the usb cable for my phone and the instant it touched the from USB ports on my P182, the computer shut down. Had to reset the CMOS to get it to boot. The cable was not plugged into anything. Could I have done any permanent damage? I generally only use these for flash drives and have never had an issue. Worth replacing the ports or disconnecting them from the motherboard?
Ahhhhhhh!

I had that same issue with my Antec 902... right before my power supply bit the dust. You might want to look at your power supply too.

I agree that it could be a PSU issue. It could be a grounding issue -- if your system has a dodgy ground, a static electricity zap when the cable touched the port could've triggered the shutdown.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
