Budget PSU suggestions

Thu Dec 19, 2013 7:58 am

I'm building a few rigs for my office, and they just need to be really – light duty budget rigs. I'm looking for PSUs with a balance of wattage and value (i.e. energy efficient and will not break down after 6 months). I am exploring using the Rosewill Mid Tower ATX cases – maybe smaller, and I've heard that their PSUs are decent as well. Suggestions are appreciated.

I have a hard time looking past Corsair for PSUs.
Their inexpensive series is the CX. (the CX430 can usually be found for $50 or less)

I have reasonable luck filtering search results by "80+" or "80 plus"

Check user reviews on anything that looks too good to be true, but it's basically impossible to reach 80% efficiency with nasty, cheap components, and the 80+ certification costs money so the really cheap companies avoid it altogether.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

Pffff, try $25 or less after MIR. Of course, the OP may be limited on MIRs by how many they intend to purchase. I do agree that it's on my short list for budget PSUs though. Newegg has the CX430 on sale quite often. They're listed at $45 right now without MIR.

Here are some PSUs to look at. (including two 80 Plus Gold rated units)
Main: i5-3570K, ASRock Z77 Pro4-M, MSI RX480 8G, 500GB Crucial BX100, 2 TB Samsung EcoGreen F4, 16GB 1600MHz G.Skill @1.25V, EVGA 550-G2, Silverstone PS07B
HTPC: A8-5600K, MSI FM2-A75IA-E53, 4TB Seagate SSHD, 8GB 1866MHz G.Skill, Crosley D-25 Case Mod

While I am a big fan of Corsair PSUs, I wouldn't rule out EVGA PSs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... ageSize=20

The bundled PSUs in Rosewill cases may be lightweight/light duty types with no PFC and less than 80% efficiency (no such claims in Newegg specs.) Those PSUs may be good enough for light duty home PC use but their reliability for continuous office use may be iffy. I have a good experience with Seasonic PSUs on my light duty rigs but you might also want to consider these (in addition to those posted above) :
