Hello, it is for the same reason you don't buy a car with a P.O.S. engine if you want to get from point "A" to point "B" witout major headaches.

Otherwise it prevents multitudes of problems, the least of which is corrupt data in memory and hard drives during power glitches. The larger and better regulated the supply, the "smoother" the supply voltage during heavy demand spikes and power line brown-outs.

Thats really simple actually . If you like your computer to be 100% stable a good psu goes a long way towards that . i had an elcheapo psu in one of my computers and it would randomly reboot and was a pain in the ass in general . be using windows and all at once computer would just reboot itself out of the blue . got a couple of enermax 431's and it hasnt happened since :D

Without electricity the usefulness of your computer is limited to that of an expensive paperweight. :P

A good power supply ensures that you always have a steady and adequate supply of power for your machine to operate. The PCs that Grandma and Grampa use can usually get by without tip top PSUs since their machine most likely won't be pushed to it's limit as enthuasists machines often are.

If you get a **** power supply you'll likely get a lot of sagging or fluctuating voltages. This is really hard on electronics (you probably have a lot of capacitors on your motherboard to counter it but it will be hard on them as well).

Aside from being of lower quality itself, a cheap power supply, because of the aformentioned voltage saggings and fluctations, will simply make your hardware far more prone to generating errors (which can lead to instability depending on how serious they are). Systems with **** PSUs are generally flakey.

also a good PSU tends to be more quiet then generic PSUs one of greatest sources of fan noise in most systems is the PSU fan so if you want to go for a quiet system getting a good PSU is a must

That said, if you are in the market for a PSU, I suggest the following:

1. Antec
2. Enermax
3. Sparkle

There are a few other really high quality brands, those are just my 3 favorites.

Sometimes you get lucky with generic PSUs. I have two 300w PSUs that work okay. But if you do any overclocking, you should definitely have a good brand name PSU for a higher overclock and system stability. Antec and Enermax are good, but PC Power and Cooling PSUs rank at the top.

Anyone got an opinion on Q-tec PSU's? They seem really cheap compared to the other brands mentioned - does this reflect the quality?

Really cheap should be the first great big waving red flag.

You usually get what you pay for, especially with something like a power supply.

Q-Tec is not a brand known for quality power supplies, no.

OK.....

Can someone tell me a quality powersupply that has ample power for my computer. (five case fans, DVD, CD-RW, one harddrive, rest on my tag) That is fairly quiet and does not cost too much. I think I need at least a 400 watt. :D

The ample power and quiet parts of that should be easy...the 'does not cost too much' might be a different story... :P

I have an Antec TruePower 480W which has been able to stand up to my abuse quite well. 8)

I second the Antec PSU's, they always work good. Sometimes though, it's cheaper to buy one of their cases with the 400w in it, than just a 400w! But seriously, they aren't that $$$...100% worth the little bit extra...

BTW - 100th post...Yay!

Antec PSUs arent too expensive, and have never failed me.

BTW, congrats on your 100th post.

Geeze, do a search. There are like 10000 threads already where a good power supply is asked for and recommended.

Fist of all a "GOOD" ps unit offers undoubtedly great stability not allowing your system to crash...moreover having a ps unit of 460watt for example gives you the opportunity to add more hardware to your computer like dvd-r or cd-r or hard disks...anything so to conclude expendability means lots of watts and stability means quality if you mix those two aspects you get the perfect ps unit... :P
