Dell power supply replacement

Thu Aug 14, 2003 10:11 pm

I have a friend with an Optiplex GX110 (P3 667 or so) whose power supply has gone on the fritz, and is no longer under warranty or other such nice things. Replacing it would be easy enough, but I remember Dell having previously used power supplies that had the negative-positive rails swapped on the mobo header. The question I pose is whether or not this GX110 was likely to have been made during the period they were doing this. (I don't really remember when exactly the whole business was supposed to have been going on)

I guess that suggesting a new Antec power supply, NForce2 motherboard, AthlonXP and PC3200 memory as the solution would be a bit over the top?

PC Power & Cooling has Dell power supplies, but the price is a little steep compared to other brands ($89 for either a Silencer 275 or Turbo Cool 300). Their power supply selector lists the OptiPlex GXa and GXi and they both point to the Silencer 275 Dell (though the Turbo Cool would work as well if you don't mind the noise ;)).

Turns out it's actually not a GX110- it's some similar spec model, but slim desktop form factor, which I'm betting means some crazy non-standard powersupply size and format. JAE's option is looking more and more tempting. ;)

"I'd like to thank all the little people who made this possible..."

Seriously, how much did Dell want for the replacement power supply?

wow, i hate dell as well. However i am on one right now. And I'm pretty sure its PS is dying as it has so many blue screens and system errors. I hate dells. On a lighter note, back in early 99' this thing was awesome, brand new with :o 128mb :o of ram(loads for the time) and a 500mhz pentium 3 **drools** a 16mb voodoo 3 top of the line. Unfortunatly, now this 1800$ dream machine has turned into a piece of messed up crap waiting to be replaced and thrown into a closet...

The connector looks like a standard ATX connector, but all the wiring is changed around. And like lickety says...it goes boom when powered up.
